Off to Poitiers to catch the trio Birdstone and their blend of heavy rock and blues, which has been delighting us for several albums now. In mid-October, the band invites us to discover their fourth album, simply titled IV. It will be available from 16 October via Harpyes Records. Six tracks where the instruments take centre stage, delivering ever-stronger emotions.
The album opens with “No One Else” and, right from the start, Basile Chevalier-Coudrain’s guitar work strikes a chord. The heavy and blues influences are clear, and the track sends shivers down our spines from the very first note. The musician is in fine form and adds to the thrill with his warm, captivating voice. Recorded in the Aveyron, far from it all, the album exudes the trio’s desire to sweep us away into their world and turn every track into a true musical adventure. The rhythms on “Blackhand” demonstrate just how ingeniously the duo of Edwige Thirion on bass and Benjamin Rousseau on drums bring the finest moments of heavy blues to life. The influences are varied and range across this track from blues to 70s rock, via more stoner-inspired sounds, and suffice to say that it is, once again, a resounding success. “Largo” takes its time, clocking in at a full eleven minutes, with an opening where Basile’s voice pierces right through us with a masterful, slow and hypnotic blues number, before the energy picks up a little further into the track, leaving us starry-eyed at just how much the musicians are at the top of their game. Let’s leave the blues behind for a more psychedelic-tinged track with “Vultures”. Here, there’s no respite; the rhythms are furious, showcasing Edwige and Benjamin’s versatility whilst making us want to get up and move around in our living room, nodding our heads to the beat. Basile returns to raw emotion with “Fade And Disappear”! Quite simply, every note is, once again, a delight to our ears, and he shows us that he has even more than one string to his bow when it comes to vocals. Between the soft vocals at the start of the track and the powerful singing that follows, we feel everything the band wants to convey in this sublime new piece of music. Time flies when you’re in their company, and yet “Swell”, the album’s final track, is already upon us. In this entirely instrumental piece, the trio lets their mastery shine through one last time, taking us on a journey into a more dreamlike world where mental images are shaped by our emotions in the moment, a track that leaves us with nothing but the urge to play the album again as soon as possible.
It’s hard not to be full of praise for this new Birdstone album! IV is a pure auditory delight that takes us on a journey through a most delightful emotional whirlwind. You can really sense all the hard work the trio has put into this release, and it’s clear that their time away from the world to create this album has paid off. We can only encourage you to rush out and listen to this album as soon as it’s released, and for our part, we’re eagerly awaiting the band’s future tour dates.
