Following their masterpiece Weight of the False Self, released in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, and to overwhelmingly positive critical acclaim, the legendary Hatebreed are back with their ninth album, Fatal Paradox, on their new label, BLKIIBLK. Once again, the Americans have treated us to eleven tracks that are both relentless and devastatingly effective.

So it took six years for the Connecticut band to release another album. And with good reason: when you’re touring the world as much as they are, it’s hard to find the time to get together in the studio. And finally, the miracle has happened. Fans of the band will be more than delighted to hear the opening riffs of ‘Kill Count Increase’, which kicks off this new album perfectly. All the aggression that has characterised the band for over 30 years is back. Jasta’s vocals are more powerful than ever. It just goes to show that getting older is a real privilege.
Here, then, we’re still dealing with hardcore/thrash crossover ++, produced as brilliantly as ever. Heavy, slow and explosive riffs, as on the title track ‘Fatal Paradox’ or ‘Sacrifice Season’, featuring John Tardy of Obituary. There’s absolutely no room for breathing space (here too, you don’t change a winning team). The tracks follow one another at breakneck speed and literally crush us with their sheer force. ‘Still a Threat’, ‘Truth Is A Lion’ and ‘Total Invincible’ start off quietly before literally exploding into breaks and other madness. ‘None Left To Save’ also builds the tension to a crescendo. The intro bassline on ‘Decision Become Destiny’ is to die for. Its frenzied rhythm section and Matt’s drum patterns are monstrous. Rolls, double-bass lines and that groove!
This album is a real blast and, once again, painfully topical. It tackles political manipulation and societal divisions in ‘Fatal Paradox’, and the decline and deterioration of human conditions in ‘Kill Count Increase’ and ‘The Carrion Choir’. ‘Make The Demon Obey’ is about regaining self-control and rejecting manipulation. The urgency of this track is phenomenal. The album concludes with a cover: ‘Poison Planet’, originally performed by Corrosion of Conformity. And once again, it is painfully topical, as it tackles pollution, the nuclear threat and political blindness regarding the destruction of the Earth. This track is an explosion of speed and rage that warms the heart.
Powerful in both substance and style, Fatal Paradox marks a masterful comeback. Hatebreed show us once again that, even after a 30-year career, there’s still room to evolve, without losing their original DNA or any of their brilliance. Growing older definitely has its perks. We can’t wait to see them back on stage.
