En 2021, le groupe de heavy métal Sortilège revenait sur le devant de la scène avec un album de titres réenregistrés incluant deux inédits, avec un nouveau line-up toujours mené par Christian ‘Zouille’ Augustin (chant). Cette année le groupe revient avec un album entièrement inédit intitulé Apocalypso, qui sera disponible dès le 3 mars via Verycords. Cet album serait-il le signe d’un retour au sommet pour Sortilège?

Comme à la grande époque du groupe, les morceaux ont pour sujet les grandes histoires et légendes issues des différentes cultures du monde. On commence avec « Poseidon » qui déjà confirme que la voix de Christian n’a pas pris une ride et est toujours aussi puissante. On sent à la composition de ce titre que le nouveau line-up a trouvé son angle d’attaque. On retrouve ce qui a toujours fait le charme du groupe français mais avec une dose de modernité supplémentaire.

Dans les morceaux « Attila » et « La Parade Des Centaures », Stéphane Buriez (Loudblast) vient ajouter sa voix aux compositions. La fusion des voix des deux chanteurs fonctionne à merveille et montre que le métal chanté en français à encore de belles heures devant lui.

Bruno Ramos et Olivier Spitzer forment un duo de guitare impactant qui s’intègre parfaitement à ce qui fait le sel de la musique de Sortilège, un heavy metal puissant qui ne cherche pas à ressembler à 100% à ce qui peut être fait dans les pays anglosaxons. Sur le single « Derrière Les Portes De Babylone » c’est le groupe tunisien Myrath qui vient apporter tout son talent à une composition qui mêle le son de Sortilège à celui très oriental de Myrath. Les parties chantées en arabe apportent un véritable cachet à ce morceau et montrent que la collaboration entre deux groupes de cet envergure ne peut apporter que du bon.

« Le Sacre Du Sorcier » et « Encore Un Jour » confirment que ce nouvel album fera date dans la discographie du groupe. La section rythmique portée par Sébastien Bonnet à la basse et Clément Rouxel à la batterie est parfaitement maîtrisée et nous donne envie de headbanger sans s’arrêter. Il reste trois titres sur cet album et ils vont chacun apporter une nouvelle preuve que le retour de Sortilège n’est pas juste une envie de passage. On sent que chaque titre est très travaillé et veux montrer que la formation souhaite reprendre l’aventure en proposant le meilleur.

Le dernier titre « Apocalypso » accueille de nouveau Kevin Codfert (Myrath) pour des parties de claviers et de chant qui viennent s’intégrer pleinement dans la composition. On ressent encore une fois cette envie de partager ce retour avec une génération plus jeune qui a été inspirée par le groupe d’une manière ou d’une autre. Ce dernier morceau vient clôturer en beauté un album qui m’aura tenu en haleine tout du long.

 

Sortilège confirme avec Apocalypso un retour qui s’annonçait déjà réussi avec l’album précédent. La nouvelle formation a vraiment trouvé sa pate et on retrouve le groupe qu’on connaît mais avec un son remis au goût du jour. Tout ce qui faisait le succès de la formation dans les années 80 est bien là mais la nouveauté apporte quelque chose de plus, ce qui fait que ce nouvel album ne sonne pas juste comme une redite du passé. Une œuvre qui saura plaire autant aux fans de la première heure qu’aux nouveaux venus.

In 2021, the heavy metal band Sortilège came back on the scene with an album of re-recorded tracks including two unreleased ones, with a new line-up still led by Christian ‘Zouille’ Augustin (vocals). This year the band is back with a brand new album entitled Apocalypso, which will be available on March 3rd via Verycords. Would this album be the sign of a return to the top for Sortilège?

 

As in the great days of the band, the songs are about the great stories and legends from different cultures of the world. We start with « Poseidon » which already confirms that Christian‘s voice has not aged and is still as powerful. We feel in the composition of this title that the new line-up has found its angle of attack. We find what always made the charm of the French group but with an additional dose of modernity.

In the tracks « Attila » and « La Parade Des Centaures », Stéphane Buriez (Loudblast) adds his voice to the compositions. The fusion of the voices of the two singers works wonderfully and shows that the metal sung in French still has beautiful hours ahead.

Bruno Ramos and Olivier Spitzer form an impacting guitar duo that fits perfectly with what makes Sortilège’s music, a powerful heavy metal that doesn’t try to sound 100% like what can be done in the Anglo-Saxon countries. On the single « Derrière Les Portes De Babylone » it is the Tunisian group Myrath who comes to bring all its talent to a composition which mixes the sound of Sortilège with the very oriental one of Myrath. The parts sung in Arabic bring a real stamp to this piece and show that the collaboration between two groups of this scale can bring only good.

« Le Sacre Du Sorcier » and « Encore Un Jour » confirm that this new album will be a milestone in the band’s discography. The rhythmic section carried by Sébastien Bonnet on bass and Clément Rouxel on drums is perfectly mastered and makes us want to headbang without stopping. There are three tracks left on this album and they will each bring a new proof that the return of Sortilège is not just a passing fancy. We feel that each track is very worked and wants to show that the band wants to resume the adventure by offering the best.

The last track « Apocalypso » welcomes again Kevin Codfert (Myrath) for keyboards and singing parts that are fully integrated in the composition. We feel once again this desire to share this comeback with a younger generation that has been inspired by the band in one way or another. This last piece comes to close in beauty an album which will have held me in suspense all along.

 

Sortilège confirms with Apocalypso a comeback that was already successful with the previous album. The new formation has really found its pate and we find the band we know but with a new sound. Everything that made the success of the band in the 80’s is still there but the newness brings something more, so that this new album doesn’t sound just like a rehash of the past. A work that will please both the fans of the first hour and the newcomers.
