En 2019, je découvrais Humanity’s Last Breath en live et je prenais une claque monumentale! J’ai ensuite découvert la discographie du groupe puis suivi les nouvelles sorties. Il y a deux ans Välde m’avait totalement retourné et annonçait un nouveau virage toujours plus violent pour la formation suédoise. Cette année sort Ashen, toujours via Unique Leader Records, et j’ai hâte de découvrir ce que le groupe a dans sa besace pour cette nouvelle sortie, qui s’annonce très violente si on s’en fie à la pochette de l’album.

« Blood Spilled » démarre avec une intro sinistre puis la voix surpuissante de Filip Danielsson arrive, et le chanteur n’hésite pas à nous montrer toute ses capacités vocales. Les rythmes sont d’une lenteur abyssale et laissent monter la sauce petit à petit. Le groupe n’est clairement pas là pour nous ménager et on adore ça! Dans les morceaux suivants, le deaethcore du groupe se tinte même de partie slam, et toujours ces riffs djent qu’on adore retrouver. Les guitares gardent aussi cet accordage très bas, caractéristique de la formation suédoise. On est emporté dans un monde de violence et de désolation qui se ressent dans chaque cri, dans chaque note, dans chaque rythmique. Laissez vous emporter par les changements de tempo de « Lifeless, Deathless » ou les riffs torturés de « Instill » qui dans les deux cas ne vous laissent aucun répit et montrent une fois encore toute l’étendue du talent de la formation.
L’album avance et chaque titre est une nouvelle démonstration de composition violente. « Catastrophize », par exemple, va encore plus loin dans l’accordage bas des guitares et dans les blast beats assassins. Ashen est aussi une véritable leçon de breakdown, ils ne sont jamais là où on les attends et c’est clairement très rafraichissant dans un monde où on les voit arriver à des kilomètres à la ronde. Et le groupe va même parfois, jusqu’à nous faire croire qu’un break va arriver et au final pas du tout, une vraie réussite! On note aussi le passage en chant clair sur « Passage », véritable surprise de cet album! La désolation résonne en nous et « Shell » vient en remettre une couche avant une fin d’album en apothéose! « Burden » nous annonce le cataclysme à venir, et « Bearer » nous laisse avec cette impression qu’un 33 tonnes nous a roulé dessus une fois de plus.
Encore une fois Humanity’s Last Breath confirment avec Ashen leur envie de nous balancer dans les oreilles ce qu’il peut y avoir de plus violent. Les sonorités, volontairement torturées, font de cet album une véritable pierre angulaire du genre. On replongera souvent dans ces nouveaux morceaux pour en déceler toutes les subtilités. Mais en tout cas on ressort de cet album avec une véritable impression d’avoir voyagé dans un univers écorché, détruit et malsain et c’est totalement ce qu’on recherchait!

In 2019, I discovered Humanity’s Last Breath live and got a huge kick out of it! I then discovered the band’s discography and followed their new releases. Two years ago, Välde totally blew me away, heralding a new and increasingly violent direction for the Swedish band. This year sees the release of Ashen, still via Unique Leader Records, and I can’t wait to find out what the band have in store for this new release, which promises to be very violent if the album cover is anything to go by.
« Blood Spilled » kicks off with a sinister intro, then Filip Danielsson‘s overpowering vocals kick in, and the singer doesn’t hesitate to show off his vocal skills. The rhythms are abysmally slow, gradually building to a climax. The band clearly don’t go easy on us, and we love it! In the following tracks, the band’s deaethcore is even tinged with a slam part, and there are always those djent riffs that we love. The guitars are also kept in the very low tuning characteristic of the Swedish band. You’re swept up in a world of violence and desolation, and you can feel it in every scream, every note and every rhythm. Let yourself be carried away by the tempo changes of « Lifeless, Deathless » or the tortured riffs of « Instill », both of which leave you with no respite and once again demonstrate the full extent of the band’s talent.
The album moves forward and each track is a new demonstration of violent composition. « Catastrophize », for example, takes the low tuning of the guitars and the killer blast beats even further. Ashen is also a real lesson in breakdown, they’re never where you expect them to be and that’s clearly very refreshing in a world where you can see them coming from miles away. And the band even go so far as to make us believe that a break is coming, but in the end it’s not – a real success! There’s also the switch to clean vocals on ‘Passage’, a real surprise on this album! The desolation resonates within us and « Shell » adds another layer before the album comes to an apotheosis! « Burden » heralds the cataclysm to come, and « Bearer » leaves us with the impression that a huge truck has rolled over us once again.
Once again with Ashen, Humanity’s Last Breath confirm their desire to throw the most violent music at our ears. The deliberately tortured sounds make this album a real cornerstone of the genre. You’ll have to dip back into the new tracks many times to discover all the subtleties. But in any case, you’ll come away from this album with a real impression of having travelled into a flayed, destroyed and unhealthy universe, and that’s exactly what we were looking for!
