Après une douce nuit au camping du festival, où le calme est demandé et respecté, nous nous apprêtons à vivre notre deuxième jour au BrakRock. Au programme, toujours du punk, avec The Drowns, Chaser, The Casualties, Cancer Bats, Itchy, Mad Caddies, Less than Jake, The Cloverhearts, H2O, Descendents et zebrahead! Une journée festive et chargée qu’on vous raconte ici!

The Drowns
Nous arrivons donc sur site pour y découvrir The Drowns. Les américains nous chopent très rapidement dans leur belle énergie festive. Leur rock’n roll aux accents punk nous ravit rapidement. La voix oscille entre crooner blues/rock et écossais qu’on s’attendrait à retrouver dans un pub. Leurs titres ont de quoi donner le sourire à tous les festivaliers présents, et les premières danses apparaissent. A la demande du chanteur, on se rend compte que pas mal de monde a déjà vu le groupe venu de Seattle. The Drowns a un côté électrisant et fait clairement le show. Ils célèbrent l’amitié avec “Just The Way She Goes” et leur plaisir est communicatif. Le refrain de ce morceau rentre facilement en tête, comme ceux de la plupart des compositions du groupe. On arrive tout doucement vers la fin du set avec “Blacked Out”, tiré de l’album éponyme sorti plus tôt cette année. On quitte le groupe en se disant qu’on ne manquera pas de se plonger dans leur discographie!
Chaser
On reste sur la Wood Stage pour accueillir un autre groupe américain avec Chaser. Ils ont une belle communauté de fans qui les attend de pied ferme. Dès les premières notes, ils se mettent d’ailleurs à sauter joyeusement. Chaser nous délivre un skate punk mélodique et énergique. Et tandis que le ciel s’assombrit et que la pluie fait son apparition, les lights flashent tels des éclairs. On tape joyeusement des mains avec le groupe qui fait participer le public dans une belle communion. On est décidément sur une ambiance festive aujourd’hui! Certains titres comme “Fault Lines” nous donnerait la chair de poule tant on ressent des émotions à leur écoute. On sent une réelle osmose entre le groupe et son public, une proximité authentique qui fait beaucoup de bien à vivre. Sur scène, la complicité entre les musiciens est également évidente. Après un premier slam de Mike LeDonne (chant), le public en redemande, le suivant partout, prêt à le réceptionner. Il finira par céder à la pression du public, avec un plaisir non dissimulé. Un peu plus tard, les enfants sont invités à partager un temps sur la scène avec le groupe. On retient de ce concert un beau moment de partage et un punk rock mélodique et énergique plein d’émotions.
The Casualties
On se rend rapidement sur la River Stage pour retrouver The Casualties. On doit avouer que ça nous fait un bien fou de les revoir, la dernière fois étant pour ma part en 2019 au feu Bobble Café! Très rapidement le pit prend forme, entre pogo et circle pit. Les New Yorkais nous délivrent une énergie brute, qui nous claque en pleine face. On est dans de la pure tradition punk avec des crêtes impeccables vissées sur les têtes de David Rodriguez (chant) et Jake Kolatis (guitare/chant). Ça joue vite, ça joue fort et c’est d’une efficacité redoutable. Les hymnes s’enchaînent à l’instar de “1312”, “Ashes of my ennemies” et “We are all we have”, tous les trois joués à la suite. Pour ce dernier, David vient à la barrière et chante avec le public. Il y reste malgré les slameurs qui lui arrivent dessus. Il finira même par escalader l’estrade et rencontrer les spectateurs qui s’y trouvent, leur tendant le micro. Toujours en grande forme, il effectuera également un saute mouton à la mode punk au-dessus de son guitariste, depuis la grosse caisse de la batterie. Pour terminer, un drapeau “Casualties Unity” flottera pendant “Unknown Soldier”, dans un dernier moment de communion. On ressort de ce concert ragaillardis par toute l’énergie du pure punk de The Casualties, sourire aux lèvres, convaincus qu’il est encore nécessaire de se battre face aux injustices extrêmes de la société.
Cancer Bats
Après une petite pause bien nécessaire pour hydrater et reposer nos corps parfois meurtris par les pogos, nous retournons sur la River Stage pour y attendre avec impatience Cancer Bats. Malgré leurs deux passages lillois plutôt récents, on ne se lasse pas de voir les canadiens sur scène. Très rapidement, le pit est investi par un public connaisseur. En quelques minutes, Liam Cormier (chant) nous accroche par sa puissance et son esprit de partage. Il a un charisme impressionnant, et occupe la scène d’une main de maitre, dans un survêtement blanc qu’on ne supporterait pas vu la chaleur! Le punk hardcore du groupe est extrêmement efficace, retournant tout sur son passage. Les canadiens nous régalent sans jamais se prendre la tête, dans une osmose particulièrement ressentie avec le public. Le pit reste pendant un temps globalement assez calme, quelques correux en profitant tout de même pour se déchainer au milieu. Il finit par s’ouvrir tout de même, les titres du groupe nous entraînant inexorablement à pogoter et bouger dans tous les sens. Liam fera un clin d’œil aux francophones présents, en ayant croisé pas mal sur le stand de merch, avec une petite phrase dans notre langue, au milieu de cette région flamande. On est encore une fois conquis par Cancer Bats, qui nous livre toujours une prestation pleine d’énergie authentique.
Itchy
Ayant découvert Itchy au hasard d’une playlist Spotify il y a quelques années, ce concert fait partie des mes grands attendus de ce week-end. Il s’agit là du deuxième passage en Belgique du groupe allemand, en 20 ans d’existence! Le trio nous assène son punk rock à la Blink-182 avec brio. Leurs mélodies sont complètement feel good, et d’une efficacité incroyable. Les compositions telles que “Dancing In The Sun” ou “No one’s Listening” donnent la sensation d’être heureux, insouciant, tels des ados des années 2000. Itchy nous interprète même un titre dans sa langue natale avec “Faust”, chanté par Daniel Friedl (basse/chant).Il partage le micro avec Sebastian Hafner pour nous présenter des titres tous aussi géniaux les uns que les autres. “Thoughts and Prayers” issus de leur dernier album Dive (2023) est particulièrement remarquable, avec une structure rythmique un peu différente. Avant de lancer “Why Still Bother”, Daniel nous lance un “Ladies and gentlemen and every persons between” particulièrement rassembleur. Devant la scène a lieu une immense fête. On sent que le trio prend plaisir à jouer, et leurs sourires et joies sont incroyablement communicatifs. Avec leur présence scénique et leurs mélodies, on a envie de s’aimer tous, de se rassembler. Comme un signe, un rayon de soleil vient illuminer leur prestation. On ne voit pas le temps passer que le concert touche déjà à sa fin. Les allemands terminent avec une reprise de “I Love It”, pour laquelle chacun change de place, dans un dernier moment de partage total. Itchy fait clairement partie des concerts les plus remarquables de cette édition. On espère les revoir très vite. Et si jamais vous nous lisez : Itchy, n’hésitez pas à venir jouer en France, on vous attend!
Mad Caddies
Après autant d’émotions, on va se poser un peu sur le site très ombragé et bucolique, profitant pour échanger avec des habitués du festival. On admire au passage les skateurs qui s’aventurent sur la rampe installée sur le site.
On retourne donc sur la River Stage pour assister au show de Mad Caddies. C’est une véritable armada qui envahit la scène, représentant toutes les familles d’instruments. Une surdosage des basses nous empêche un peu de profiter des cuivres au début, mais cela se régule rapidement. Toutefois, on choisira après quelques titres de s’éloigner pour profiter d’un son plus équilibré. Le ska punk festif du groupe nous embarque dans une joyeuse fête. On bouge les épaules, on se déhanche, on sourit… Le public est aux anges! La reprise toute en douceur de “She” de Green Day nous embarque, donnant envie de fermer les yeux et de juste profiter du son du groupe, sur notre petit nuage. Entre titres très ska, et d’autres plus punk, le set est parfaitement équilibré. Le groupe alterne également entre titres récents et plus anciens, ces derniers étant dédicacés aux parents, tandis que Chuck Robertson (chant) salue la nouvelle génération. On a notamment droit à “Arrows Room 117” issu du dernier album sorti en 2024, et sonnant très jazzy, comme à “Road Rash” parue plus de 25 ans auparavant! On sent toute cette expérience scénique dans leur prestation et l’ambiance se propage loin de la scène. Même au fond les gens dansent, emportés par le son des cuivres. On quitte donc la River Stage remplis de chaleur humaine et musicale.
Less Than Jake
Après une petite douche liée à une météo plus capricieuse que la veille, nous nous apprêtons à nous réchauffer avec Less Than Jake. Les américains arrivent sur scène après une intro sur le son de la 20th Century Fox. Dès le premier titre, on sent toute l’énergie très punk du groupe avec “Last One Out of Liberty City”. Puis on entre dans le vif du ska avec “Johnny Quest Thinks We’re Sellout”, qui laisse une belle place au trombone. Les premiers pas de danse ne se font pas attendre côté public. On est dans une digne suite de Mad Caddies, avec un ska punk plus énergique encore. Roger Lima (basse, chant) harangue la foule, appelant également les personnes sur l’estrade à descendre faire la fête. Chris DeMakes(guitare, chant) assure tout autant le show. Leur deux voix assurent un rythme aux titres, ne laissant aucun temps mort. La foule présente est impressionnante, signe que le groupe fait partie des plus attendus de cette édition. Le public est amené à participer et on se sent vraiment en communion avec le groupe. Même les enfants se mettent à slamer! Malheureusement nous quittons la fête bien avant la fin pour aller profiter d’une autre qui se déroule à l’autre bout du festival : les aléas des choix lorsque toutes les scènes sont aussi qualitatives!
The Cloverhearts
Grade 2 ayant dû annuler leur participation, ce sont les australiens de The Cloverhearts qui les remplacent sur l’affiche. Et il était impensable pour nous de rater la seule cornemuse du week-end! On les avait découverts à la Brat Cave en octobre dernier et on est très heureux de les revoir. Leur punk celtique crée instantanément une ambiance de fête irlandaise. La Lake Stage permet une vraie proximité avec le public. On note quelques larsens mais le son est rapidement rééquilibré pour les éviter. Derrière sa cornemuse, le sonneur se déchaîne sur la musique, faisant valser son instrument telle une rockstar. De son côté, le batteur finit régulièrement debout derrière ses fûts en fin de morceau. “You’ve Got A Friend” rassemble les gens, et son refrain entraînant est repris en chœur par le public. On célèbre ici la fête et l’amitié en dansant joyeusement tous ensemble. La cornemuse est parfois lâchée pour une flûte notamment pour “Junky”. Sam Cooper (chant) est toujours au plus près du public et nous remerciera dans toutes les langues. Il tend le micro vers le public pour que chacun puisse participer aux refrains. “No Time For False Friends” prend des petits airs de ska, au cas où les titres ne seraient pas encore assez dansants! On termine le set dans une communion incroyable avec la reprise de “Country Roads”. Ce moment est tellement fort qu’il est hors de question de laisser les musiciens partir comme ça. Ils reviennent donc pour un dernier titre avant de se jeter dans le public, tout sourire. On a hâte de voir à nouveau The Cloverhearts, valeur sûre du punk celtique!
H2O
Lorsque l’on revient sur la Wood Stage, le set de H2O a déjà commencé, et le moins qu’on puisse dire c’est qu’il y a foule! Il nous est impossible de nous approcher et nous nous contentons d’observer le show de loin. Et celui-ci vient aussi bien des musiciens que des spectateurs qui font des stages dive, toujours par-dessus ce fameux buisson. Le punk hardcore des New Yorkais résonne fort, même pour nous qui sommes éloignés de la scène. L’énergie se propage comme les ondes musicales jusqu’au fond du site. Les refrains sont également repris en chœur, jusque sous les arbres lointains, notamment pour “5 Yr Plan”. H2O c’est du punk hardcore puissant et rapide. On n’est donc pas très étonné que la prestation s’arrête un peu avant l’heure prévue, malgré un nombre conséquent de titres joués. On entendra le rappel de loin, déjà en route pour pouvoir assister au concert de la River Stage dans de meilleures conditions.
Descendents
Encore un groupe passé récemment au Black Lab! Moins de deux mois après leur live remarquable en métropole lilloise, c’est donc sur la scène du Brakrock que nous retrouvons les américains de Descendents. On sent une grosse attente du public pour les américains. Massés devant la scène, une foule impressionnante attend l’arrivée sur scène de ces légendes du punk rock. Le groupe est un habitué du Brakrock en étant au moins à leur troisième passage à Duffel. Malgré une fine pluie, la magie opère dès les premières notes de “Feel This” et il nous semble avoir face à nous un adolescent cinquantenaire en la personne de Milo Aukerman (chant), muni d’un magnifique porte gourde. En osmose avec le groupe, nous devenons aussi de grands adolescents. “Hope” arrive en seconde position sur la setlist et le public s’enflamme. Durant une heure, Descendents alterne morceaux punk rock mélodiques et titres plus agressifs. “Everything Sux” sonne comme une complainte libérant de tant de frustrations. Le son parfaitement équilibré nous permet de profiter comme il se doit de l’énergie du groupe. Les riffs de guitare de Stephen Egerton nous font bouger, malgré la fatigue de ce deuxième soir. Et alors qu’un rideau de pluie s’abat furtivement sur nous, on reste sans même se poser de question pour apprécier le reste du set. Les refrains sont repris en chœur, les spectateurs ayant visiblement toujours de la voix. “Merican” semble ainsi résonner sur tout le site, voire plus encore. Durant une heure, Descendents va nous interpréter pas loin de 30 titres! On clôt ce beau concert par “Suburban Home” et “Smile”, que nous avons évidemment tous aux lèvres.
zebrahead
On arrive déjà à la conclusion de ce festival. Et celle-ci aura donc lieu sur la Wood Stage, en compagnie de zebrahead. Avant même le début du concert, on repère un bar sur scène, tenu par des personnes déguisées en squelette. En guise d’introduction, “America Fuck Yeah” résonne sur le site. Puis le groupe entre, démarrant très fort avec “When Both Sides Sucks, We’re All Winners”. Très rapidement, face à ce titre explosif, le pogo devient fou. Sur scène la fête est totale, usant d’accessoires à l’instar de Dan Palmer et de sa machine à bulles. Le groupe réveille même les plus usés d’entre nous, et tout le public s’accroupit pour mieux sauter à la demande des américains. Les chants de Ali Tabatabaee et de Adrian Estrella se complètent, entre chant clair et rap, pour nous apporter des émotions dans tous les sens. “Hello Tomorrow” est repris en chœur tandis que la pluie s’abat à nouveau sur nous. Les squelettes s’avèrent être une espèce de service d’ordre qui va s’avérer bien utile alors que quelques slameurs se retrouvent en difficulté dans le buisson. La scène prend des allures de joyeux bordel et on exulte en cette fin de festival grandiose. Les squelettes participent à la fête et viennent nous faire une jolie chorégraphie sur “Drink Drink”. Entre circle pit, pogos et slam, on ne s’ennuie pas dans le public. “I Have Mixed Drinks About Feelings” nous donne la chair de poule par son chant plein d’émotions et la guitare particulièrement mélodique. On termine le set par trois titres d’anthologie, à savoir “Falling Appart”, “My Friends Are Nobodies” et “Anthem”. Lorsque le groupe remercie à nouveau Itchy passé bien plus tôt, on espère une tournée commune, mais nous apprendrons quelques jours plus tard que ce ne sera que pour l’Allemagne. Peu importe, nous reverrons zebrahead le 13.12 à Anvers et on vous conseille d’y être! On termine cette soirée avec un sourire accroché aux lèvres et le cœur prêt à exploser après autant de joie, de fête et de partage. Même le rideau de pluie qui s’abat sur nous et transforme le camping en pataugeoire n’aura pas raison de notre bonne humeur après ces deux jours.
On repart vraiment heureux d’avoir pu voir tous ces groupes. Si vous aimez le punk rock, on vous conseille vraiment de vous rendre au Brakrock. En dehors du budget qui est plus proche des autres festivals flamands que des festivals de punk auxquels nous nous rendons parfois, il y a vraiment de quoi ravir les amateurs de genre. Le site est particulièrement agréable, aéré, ombragé et bucolique. Et que dire de la programmation absolument parfaite! On a hâte de découvrir l’affiche 2025!

After a gentle night’s sleep at the festival campsite, where peace and quiet is demanded and respected, we’re about to embark on our second day at BrakRock. The Drowns, Chaser, The Casualties, Cancer Bats, Itchy, Mad Caddies, Less than Jake, The Cloverhearts, H2O, Descendents and zebrahead! It was a busy, festive day, and we tell you all about it here!

The Drowns
So we arrive on site to discover The Drowns. The Americans quickly grab you with their festive energy. Their punk-tinged rock’n’roll quickly won us over. The vocals oscillate between crooner blues/rock and Scottish, which you’d expect to find in a pub. Their songs are enough to put a smile on the faces of all the festival-goers present, and the first dances begin. At the singer’s request, you realise that quite a few people have already seen the band from Seattle. The Drowns have an electrifying side and are clearly a show-stopper. They celebrate friendship with « Just The Way She Goes » and their pleasure is infectious. The chorus of this song is easy to get into your head, as are those of most of the band’s compositions. The set slowly draws to a close with ‘Blacked Out’, taken from the eponymous album released earlier this year. We leave the band saying to ourselves that we won’t be missing out on delving into their discography!
Chaser
We stay on the Wood Stage to welcome another American band, Chaser. They’ve got quite a fan base waiting for them. From the very first notes, they’re jumping up and down with joy. Chaser deliver melodic, energetic skate punk. And as the sky darkens and the rain begins to fall, the lights flash like lightning. We clap our hands happily along with the band, who engage the audience in a beautiful communion. We’re definitely in a festive mood today! Certain tracks, like « Fault Lines », give you goose bumps as you listen to them. There’s a real osmosis between the band and their audience, a genuine closeness that’s so good to experience. On stage, the complicity between the musicians is equally evident. After Mike LeDonne‘s (vocals) first slam, the audience are clamouring for more, following him around, ready to take him in. In the end, he gave in to the pressure of the audience, with undisguised pleasure. A little later, the children were invited to share a moment on stage with the band. What we take away from this concert is a beautiful moment of sharing and a melodic and energetic punk rock full of emotion.
The Casualties
We quickly made our way to the River Stage to catch up with The Casualties. We have to admit that it’s really good to see them again, the last time being in 2019 at the late Bobble Café! The pit quickly takes shape, between pogo and circle pit. The New Yorkers delivered a raw energy that slammed into our faces. It’s pure punk tradition, with David Rodriguez (vocals) and Jake Kolatis (guitar/vocals) sporting impeccable crests. It’s fast, it’s loud and it’s frighteningly effective. The anthems follow on from each other, like « 1312 », « Ashes of my ennemies » and « We are all we have », all three played in succession. For the latter, David comes to the barrier and sings with the audience. He stayed there despite the slammers coming at him. He even ended up climbing the stage to meet the audience, handing them the microphone. Still in top form, he also performed a punk-style leapfrog over his guitarist from the bass drum. Finally, a « Casualties Unity » flag flew during « Unknown Soldier », in a final moment of communion. The Casualties‘ pure punk energy left the audience with a smile on their faces, convinced that it’s still necessary to fight against the extreme injustices of society.
Cancer Bats
After a much-needed break to hydrate and rest our bodies, sometimes bruised by the pogos, we return to the River Stage to impatiently await Cancer Bats. Despite their two rather recent appearances in Lille, we never tire of seeing the Canadians on stage. Very quickly, the pit is taken over by an audience of connoisseurs. In just a few minutes, Liam Cormier (vocals) hooks us with his power and his spirit of sharing. His charisma is impressive, and he takes centre stage in a white tracksuit you wouldn’t be able to stand in the heat! The band’s hardcore punk is extremely effective, turning everything on its head. The Canadians treat us without ever getting carried away, in an osmosis with the audience that’s particularly palpable. For a while, the pit remained fairly calm, with a few of the correct ones taking advantage of it to go wild in the middle. Eventually, however, it opened up and the band’s songs inexorably got us bopping and moving in all directions. Liam winks at the French-speaking fans in attendance, having met quite a few of them on the merch stand, with a little phrase in our language, in the middle of this Flemish region. Once again we were won over by Cancer Bats, who always deliver a performance full of authentic energy.
Itchy
Having discovered Itchy by chance on a Spotify playlist a few years ago, this concert is one of the most eagerly awaited of the weekend. This is the German band’s second appearance in Belgium in their 20-year history! The trio’s Blink-182-style punk rock is brilliant. Their melodies are totally feel good, and incredibly effective. Songs like « Dancing In The Sun » and « No One’s Listening » give you the feeling of being happy and carefree, like teenagers in the year 2000. Itchy even performs a song in his native tongue with « Faust », sung by Daniel Friedl (bass/vocals), sharing the microphone with Sebastian Hafner to present us with tracks each as brilliant as the next. « Thoughts and Prayers » from their latest album Dive (2023) is particularly remarkable, with a slightly different rhythmic structure. Before launching into ‘Why Still Bother’, Daniel gives us a particularly rallying ‘Ladies and gentlemen and everyone in between’. There’s a huge party in front of the stage. You can tell the trio are enjoying themselves, and their smiles and joy are incredibly infectious. Their stage presence and melodies make you want to love each other, to come together. Like a sign, a ray of sunshine lights up their performance. The concert was already drawing to a close. The Germans finished with a cover of « I Love It », for which everyone changed places, in a final moment of total sharing. Itchy was clearly one of the most remarkable concerts of this year’s festival. We hope to see them again very soon. And if you ever read this: Itchy, don’t hesitate to come and play in France, we’re waiting for you!
Mad Caddies
After so much excitement, we settled down for a while on the shady, bucolic site, taking the opportunity to chat with some of the festival’s regulars. In passing, we admired the skateboarders who ventured onto the ramp installed on the site.
So back to the River Stage for the Mad Caddies show. A veritable armada invaded the stage, representing all the instrument families. An overdose of bass prevented us from enjoying the horns a little at first, but this soon subsided. After a few tracks, however, we opted to move away to enjoy a more balanced sound. The band’s festive ska punk takes us on a joyous journey. Shoulders shaking, swaying, smiling… The audience is in heaven! The smooth cover of Green Day‘s « She » has us on the edge of our seats, wanting to close our eyes and just enjoy the sound of the band on our little cloud. The set was perfectly balanced between ska and punk tracks. The band also alternated between recent and older tracks, the latter being dedicated to parents, while Chuck Robertson (vocals) saluted the new generation. Arrows Room 117″ from the latest album, released in 2024, sounds very jazzy, as does « Road Rash » from over 25 years ago! You can feel all this stage experience in their performance and the atmosphere spreads far from the stage. Even at the back, people were dancing, carried away by the sound of the brass instruments. So we left the River Stage full of human and musical warmth.
Less Than Jake
After a short shower to cope with the more capricious weather than the day before, we get ready to warm up with Less Than Jake. The Americans take to the stage after a 20th Century Fox intro. From the very first track, you can feel the band’s punk energy with ‘Last One Out of Liberty City’. ‘Johnny Quest Thinks We’re Sellout’, which gives the trombone pride of place, gets you into the swing of ska. The first dance steps were not long in coming. This is a worthy follow-up to Mad Caddies, with even more energetic ska punk. Roger Lima (bass, vocals) harangues the crowd, also calling on those on the stage to come down and party. Chris DeMakes (guitar, vocals) is just as much a showman. Their two voices keep the pace of the songs, leaving no downtime. The crowd was impressive, a sign that the band was one of the most eagerly awaited of this year’s edition. The audience is invited to join in, and you really feel in communion with the band. Even the children started slamming! Unfortunately, we left the party well before the end to go and enjoy another one taking place at the other end of the festival: the vagaries of choice when all the stages are of such high quality!
The Cloverhearts
Grade 2 had to cancel their appearance, so Australian band The Cloverhearts took their place on the bill. And it was unthinkable for us to miss the weekend’s only bagpipe band! We discovered them at La Brat Cave last October and we’re delighted to see them again. Their Celtic punk instantly creates an Irish party atmosphere. The Lake Stage allows them to get really close to the audience. There was some feedback, but the sound was quickly rebalanced to avoid it. Behind his bagpipes, the piper goes wild over the music, waltzing his instrument like a rockstar. For his part, the drummer regularly ends up standing behind his drums at the end of a track. « You’ve Got A Friend » brings the crowd together, and its catchy chorus is taken up by the audience. This is a celebration of festivity and friendship, with everyone dancing happily together. The bagpipes are sometimes replaced by a flute, particularly for « Junky ». Sam Cooper (vocals) is always close to the audience and will thank us in any language. He holds the microphone out to the audience so that everyone can join in with the choruses. « No Time For False Friends » took on a ska feel, in case the songs weren’t danceable enough! We ended the set in incredible communion with a cover of « Country Roads ». It was such a powerful moment that it was out of the question for the musicians to leave just like that. So they came back for one last song before throwing themselves into the audience, all smiles. We can’t wait to see The Cloverhearts again, a sure-fire Celtic punk band!
H2O
By the time we got back to the Wood Stage, H2O‘s set had already started, and it was a packed house to say the least! It’s impossible for us to get any closer, so we’re content to watch the show from afar. And the show is coming from both the musicians and the spectators doing stage dives, always over that famous bush. The New Yorkers’ hardcore punk resonates loudly, even for those of us who are a long way from the stage. The energy spreads like musical waves to the back of the site. The choruses are also taken up in chorus, even under the distant trees, especially for « 5 Yr Plan ». H2O is fast, powerful hardcore punk. So it comes as no surprise that the show ended a little before its scheduled time, despite the sheer number of tracks played. We’ll be hearing the encore from afar, already on our way to the River Stage in better conditions.
Descendents
Another band who recently played at Black Lab! Less than two months after their remarkable live show in Lille, it’s back to the Brakrock stage for American band Descendents. You can tell the audience is really looking forward to seeing the Americans. Crowded in front of the stage, an impressive crowd awaits the arrival of these legends of punk rock. The band are regulars at Brakrock, this being at least their third visit to Duffel. Despite the light rain, the magic happens from the very first notes of ‘Feel This’, and it’s as if we’re looking at a fifty-something teenager in the person of Milo Aukerman (vocals), wearing a magnificent water-bottle holder. In osmosis with the band, we become big teenagers too. « Hope » comes second on the setlist and the crowd goes wild. For an hour, Descendents alternated melodic punk rock tracks with more aggressive ones. « Everything Sux » sounds like a lament releasing so much frustration. The perfectly balanced sound allows us to take full advantage of the band’s energy. Stephen Egerton‘s guitar riffs keep us moving, despite the tiredness of this second evening. And while a curtain of rain stealthily descended on us, we stayed on without even question to enjoy the rest of the set. The refrains were taken up in chorus, the spectators clearly still having a voice. « Merican » seemed to resonate throughout the venue, and then some. Over the course of an hour, Descendents played no fewer than 30 tracks! We close this fine concert with « Suburban Home » and « Smile », which are obviously on everyone’s lips.
zebrahead
We’re already coming to the end of the festival. And it’s on the Wood Stage, with zebrahead. Even before the concert begins, we spot a bar on stage, manned by people dressed up as skeletons. By way of introduction, « America Fuck Yeah » echoed around the venue. Then the band hit the stage, kicking things off with « When Both Sides Sucks, We’re All Winners ». This explosive track soon had the crowd going wild. On stage, the party was total, with props like Dan Palmer and his bubble machine. The band wakes up even the most worn-out of us, and the whole audience crouches down to jump at the Americans’ request. The vocals of Ali Tabatabaee and Adrian Estrella complement each other, between clean vocals and rap, to bring us emotions in all directions. « Hello Tomorrow » is taken up by the chorus as the rain pours down on us once again. The skeletons turn out to be a kind of orderly service, which comes in handy as a few slammers find themselves in trouble in the bush. The stage takes on the appearance of a happy mess and we exult in this grandiose end to the festival. The skeletons join in the fun and give us a nice choreography on « Drink Drink ». With their circle pits, pogos and slams, there was never a dull moment in the audience. « I Have Mixed Drinks About Feelings » gave us goosebumps with its emotional vocals and particularly melodic guitar. The set ended with three anthology tracks: « Falling Appart », « My Friends Are Nobodies » and « Anthem ». When the band once again thanked Itchy, who had passed through earlier, we were hoping for a joint tour, but we learned a few days later that it would only be for Germany. Anyway, we’ll be seeing zebrahead again on the 13.12 in Antwerp, and we’d advise you to be there! We ended the evening with a smile on our faces and our hearts ready to explode after so much joy, celebration and sharing. Even the curtain of rain that fell on us and turned the campsite into a paddling pool didn’t dampen our spirits after these two days.
We left really happy to have been able to see all these bands. If you like punk rock, we really recommend you go to Brakrock. Apart from the budget, which is closer to other Flemish festivals than the punk festivals we sometimes go to, there’s plenty to delight fans of the genre. The site is particularly pleasant, airy, shady and bucolic. And the programme is absolutely perfect! We can’t wait to discover the 2025 line-up!
