Après un split EP plus que réussi avec Birds In Row en début d’année, Coilguns nous proposent ce 22 novembre leur quatrième album, Odd Love, via Humus Records. Un album qui s’annonce aussi puissant que leurs performances lives, prenant aux tripes dans un noise post hardcore.

Depuis leur création en 2011, Coilguns ne nous ont jamais laissé très longtemps sans nouveautés. Que ce soit avec leur quatre albums qu’avec leurs nombreux EP et split avec des artistes que l’on adore comme Abraham ou Birds In Row, Coilguns ont su trouver une place de choix dans nos écoutes. Si on ajoute à cela leurs prestations lives impressionnantes dont vous ne sortirez pas indemnes, ils se placent en incontournables de la scène post hardcore noisy actuelle. Ce qu’on aime avec Coilguns, c’est cette force de faire de chacun des membres du groupe un vrai musicien à part entière. Prenez « Placeholders » par exemple, le chant de Louis Jucker se déforme, accentuant les prononciations pour amener une vraie musicalité à son chant, et sera complété par des sifflements et autre « Oh oh » pour un titre complet. Coilguns ont enregistré cet album en Norvège, au Studio Ocean Sound qui a notamment vu passé Cult of Luna. Leur enregistrement s’est finit par une grande fête à Alesund, le Slinningsbåle, dont la pochette est issus. Un vrai feu qui est à l’image de tout cet album : une combustion quasiment explosive, dont le très bon « Black Chyme », qui emprunte sans cachoterie le rythme rapide du punk jusqu’à quasiment nous lancer dans un 2-step sur « We Missed The Parade ». En guise de single, « Bandwagoning » reprends le jeu de guitare de « You And I In The Gap » sorti sur leur précédent ouvrage, pour y venir coller un certain spoken-word. Un morceau s’offrant même parfois un rythme trash, de quoi bien critiquer notre société composé d’élite et de précaires, faisant monter une rage certaine.

Coilguns ne cesseront pas, durant tout cet album de mixer les genres, allant même jusqu’à amener un piano très jazzy sur « Caravel », qui semble abandonner ses partitions. Tout comme les guitares de « Venetian Blinds » pendant quelques secondes. Une certaine atmosphère industriel se dégage de « Featherweight », où l’on bouillonne pendant 6 minutes, n’attendant que d’exploser à la face du monde. Les fêtes de Midsommer ont peut-être eu une influence sur « The Wind To Wash The Pain » où le son des grelots, presque cérémoniale, donnent le rythme avant de clôturer l’album sur « Bunker Vaults » dont le « Ah Ah Aahhh » nous fait sourire, faisant un lien curieux dans notre cerveau avec le « Ah Ah Ah Aaaah » de Grian Chatten dans « In The Modern World ». Quoi qu’il en soit, ce morceau, nous laissant écouter les vents froids du nord est une parfaite clôture d’album pour nous laisser déguster leur musique pendant de longues minutes.

Coilguns sont indéniablement un groupe à ne pas manquer et leur nouvel opus est assez magistral. Il n’y a aucun doute qu’il sera accueilli par les fans de post hardcore, noise et post métal avec les bras grands ouverts. C’est subtil et plein de rage, bien écrit et mélangeant les styles, plein de sentiments et touchant en plein coeur.

After a highly successful split EP with Birds In Row at the start of the year, Coilguns have released their fourth album, Odd Love ,on November 22nd via Humus Records. An album that promises to be as powerful as their live performances, gripping with post-hardcore noise.

Since their inception in 2011, Coilguns have never left us without something new for very long. Whether it’s their four albums or their numerous EPs and splits with artists we love like Abraham or Birds In Row, Coilguns have found a place of choice in our listening. Add to this their impressive live performances, and you can’t help but be impressed, and you’ve got a band that’s a must-see on today’s post-hardcore noisy scene. What we love about Coilguns is that each member of the band is a true musician in his or her own right. Take “Placeholders”, for example: Louis Jucker ‘s vocals become distorted, accentuating pronunciations to bring a real musicality to his singing, and will be complemented by whistles and other “Oh ohs” for a complete track. Coilguns recorded this album in Norway, at Ocean Sound Studio, where Cult of Luna also played. Their recording ended with a big party in Alesund, the Slinningsbåle, from which the cover is taken. A real fire that reflects the whole album: an almost explosive combustion, including the excellent “Black Chyme”, which unashamedly borrows the fast rhythm of punk, almost launching us into a 2-step on “We Missed The Parade”. As a single, “Bandwagoning” takes the guitar playing from “You And I In The Gap”, released on their previous album, and adds some spoken-word. A track that even takes on a trashy rhythm, criticizing our society, made up of the elite and the precarious, and raising a certain level of rage.

Throughout the album,Coilguns never cease to mix genres, even bringing in a jazzy piano on “Caravel”, which seems to abandon its sheet music. As do the guitars on “Venetian Blinds” for a few seconds. A certain industrial atmosphere emanates from “Featherweight”, which boils over for 6 minutes, just waiting to explode in the face of the world. Midsommer’s festivities may have had an influence on “The Wind To Wash The Pain”, where the sound of bells, almost ceremonial, sets the pace before closing the album with “Bunker Vaults”, whose “Ah Ah Aahhh” makes us smile, making a curious link in our brains with Grian Chatten’s “Ah Ah Ah Aaaah” in their song « In The Modern World ». Be that as it may, this track, letting us listen to the cold northern winds, is a perfect album-closer to let us savor their music for long minutes.

Coilguns are undeniably a band not to be missed, and their new opus is quite masterful. There’s no doubt that it will be greeted by fans of post-hardcore, noise and post-metal with arms wide open. It’s subtle and full of rage, well-written and blending styles, full of feeling and touching to the core.
