Découverts en 2018 lors d’une date parisienne en première partie de Black Peaks, The Prestige m’avaient laissé un souvenir impérissable avec un son massif et une identité sonore marquante entre post métal et post hardcore. En ce mois d’avril, le groupe revient sur le devant de la scène avec Isthmos, un nouvel album qui s’annonce puissant. Disponible via Banshies depuis le 24 avril, il nous propose 8 titres qui laissent exploser le talent de la formation française, servie par le travail de Amaury Sauvé sur l’enregistrement et le mixage et Thibaut Chaumont au mastering.

Dès l’intro de « Léthé » nous voilà emportés par la force sonore de The Prestige. Alex Diaz et Fabien Gagnière nous envoient des riffs où ce mélange d’influences entre différentes formes de musique post vient nous enthousiasmer et nous montrer que le quatuor a envie de nous faire passer par toutes les émotions avec cet opus. Au chant Alex impressionne en alternant entre paroles en français et en anglais, et en montrant toute l’étendue de ses capacités vocales. « Debris » ou « Rose Du Désert » sont de véritables pépites et laissent l’auditeur dans un sentiment de dualité, entre envie de tout retourner et sensation de se laisser transporter dans une émotion brute magnifiée par la musicalité des compositions. Côté rythmique Julien Bouladoux à la basse et Thibaut Cavelier à la batterie n’hésitent pas à nous retourner les cervicales à de nombreuses reprises tout en gardant un jeu versatile à souhait avec quelques teintes plus progressives par endroit qui rendent des titres comme « Father of None » absolument inoubliables. Le son de guitare a été très travaillé sur ce disque et sonne bien plus lourd qu’auparavant. Cela est du au guitares réglées différemment que sur les précédentes sorties et au travail en studio évoqué en introduction. Le son du groupe est réellement imposant et vient nous émouvoir dans des titres comme « The Ascent » ou « Noire Nuit ». Cette dernière est à notre goût une véritable pépite de ce disque et vient rappeler à quel point ce genre musical sait créer des morceaux qui viennent s’encrer dans vos têtes en quelques instants. La fin du disque avec « Sunborn » et le puissant « Sacrifice » confirme que The Prestige ont pris le temps sur ce disque pour proposer une œuvre complète et d’une redoutable efficacité. Une fois de plus les musiciens excellent et nous offrent des morceaux laissant exploser leur maestria tout en nous plongeant dans une écoute dont on ne ressort pas indemne.
Avec Isthmos, The Prestige font un retour tonitruant dans notre liste de groupes à suivre de près. On sent une vraie évolution dans ce nouveau disque, qui vient nous enchanter de bout en bout. On vous conseille vivement de poser vos oreilles sur cette belle sortie et d’attendre impatiemment, tout comme nous le retour du groupe sur les scènes de France et d’ailleurs. Autant vous dire qu’il va falloir compter sur The Prestige dans les mois et années à venir!

Discovered in 2018 during a Paris gig as the support act for Black Peaks, The Prestige left a lasting impression on me with their massive sound and distinctive musical identity, blending post-metal and post-hardcore. This April, the band returns to the forefront with Isthmos, a new album that promises to be powerful. Available via Banshies since April 24th, it features eight tracks that showcase the French band’s talent, enhanced by Amaury Sauvé’s work on recording and mixing and Thibaut Chaumont’s mastering.
Right from the intro to ‘Léthé’, we’re swept away by the sonic power of The Prestige. Alex Diaz and Fabien Gagnière treat us to riffs where this blend of influences from various forms of post-rock really gets us excited and shows us that the quartet is keen to take us on an emotional rollercoaster with this album. On vocals, Alex impresses by alternating between French and English lyrics, showcasing the full range of his vocal abilities. “Debris” and “Rose Du Désert” are real gems, leaving the listener with a sense of duality: the urge to tear everything apart and the sensation of being swept away by raw emotion, magnified by the musicality of the compositions. On the rhythm side, Julien Bouladoux on bass and Thibaut Cavelier on drums don’t hesitate to make our necks snap on numerous occasions, whilst maintaining a wonderfully versatile style with a few more progressive touches here and there that make tracks like “Father of None” absolutely unforgettable. The guitar sound has been meticulously crafted on this album and sounds much heavier than before. This is due to the guitars being set up differently from previous releases and the studio work mentioned in the introduction. The band’s sound is truly imposing and moves us in tracks like “The Ascent” or “Noire Nuit”. In our view, this track is a real gem on the album and serves as a reminder of just how adept this musical genre is at creating songs that stick in your head in an instant. The album’s closing tracks, “Sunborn” and the powerful “Sacrifice”, confirm that The Prestige have taken their time with this album to deliver a complete and formidable work. Once again, the musicians excel, offering tracks that showcase their mastery whilst immersing us in a listening experience from which we do not emerge unscathed.
With Isthmos, The Prestige make a thunderous return to our list of bands to watch closely. You can really sense an evolution in this new album, which enchants us from start to finish. We strongly recommend you give this fine release a listen and, just like us, look forward eagerly to the band’s return to stages across France and beyond. Suffice to say, The Prestige are definitely ones to watch in the months and years to come!
