Après un concert inoubliable au Black Lab près de Lille en 2024, et la sortie de In Verses en février après treize ans d’attente, il était temps pour les Australiens de Karnivool de faire étape en Belgique dans le cadre de leur tournée européenne, ce 25 avril 2026. Le Casino de Sint-Niklaas affichait complet depuis longtemps déjà, signe que les fans attendaient ce concert avec impatience. Pour ouvrir la soirée, le groupe a choisi l’artiste canadien Intervals, pour une soirée prog métal à ne pas manquer.

Les lumières se sont éteintes dans une salle comble et Intervals est monté sur scène. Dès les premières notes de « Neurogenesis », on a compris qu’Aaron Marshall, le cerveau derrière le projet Intervals, était au sommet de sa forme. La dernière fois que nous avions vu le groupe, c’était à Paris en 2018 ; vous pouvez donc imaginer notre plaisir d’entendre pour la première fois en live les nouveaux morceaux de Memory Palace. Les riffs d’Aaron Marshall et de Travis LeVrier ont enflammé la foule avec des mélodies démentielles et un jeu intense. Côté rythmique, Nathan Bulla à la batterie et Jacob Umansky à la basse étaient eux aussi au sommet de leur art. Ces lignes de batterie et de basse prog nous ont clairement fait headbanguer du début à la fin. Malheureusement, un problème est survenu avec la guitare d’Aaron pendant « Nootropic », mais le reste du groupe a continué à jouer le morceau comme si de rien n’était, tandis qu’Aaron s’efforçait de trouver une solution au problème le plus rapidement possible. Après ce morceau, Aaron nous a offert les riffs incroyables de « Galaxy Brain » avant de revenir à The Way Forward (2017) avec le tube « Leave No Stone ». Chaque morceau est un parfait exemple de la façon dont des structures musicales complexes peuvent coexister avec un groupe fun et extrêmement divertissant. Pour illustrer cela, Nathan et Jacob ont fait un rapide jeu de pierre-feuille-ciseaux pendant un solo de guitare, et visiblement, ils comptent les points pendant la tournée. Aaron a ensuite demandé au public qui voyait Intervals pour la première fois, et la plupart des spectateurs ont levé la main. Mais les fans de longue date étaient ravis de voir les quatre musiciens revenir sur l’EP In Time de 2012 avec les deux morceaux phares « Mata Hari » et « Epiphany ». Ces deux chansons n’ont absolument rien perdu de leur puissance au fil des ans et c’est un véritable bonheur pour nous de pouvoir les réécouter. La fin approche, mais Intervals nous offre deux morceaux supplémentaires pour clôturer ce set incroyable de prog instrumental. « chronophobia » permettra au public de headbanguer une dernière fois et aux musiciens de nous offrir un dernier aperçu de leur jeu fluide, toujours sans ostentation, mais avec un pur talent et le plaisir d’être devant un public. Croyez-nous, c’est un concert que nous attendions depuis des lustres et nous n’attendrons pas 8 ans pour revoir Intervals ! Le groupe a quitté la scène visiblement heureux et a remercié Karnivool de les avoir invités en tournée.
Après une courte pause, l’heure était venue d’accueillir Karnivoool sur scène ! La foule se pressait tout près de la scène pour ne rien manquer de cette soirée, et dès les premières notes de « Ghost », on a tout de suite compris que le concert allait être une incroyable soirée de rock progressif. Le son du De Casino était d’une clarté cristalline, ce qui a permis d’apprécier encore davantage la maîtrise de chaque musicien et la voix exceptionnelle de Ian Kenny. Les nouvelles chansons sont déjà bien ancrées dans l’esprit des fans, qui n’ont pas hésité à les reprendre en chœur avec le groupe, de la première à la dernière chanson. Après un bref détour par l’album Sound Awake avec « Simple Boy », nous sommes rapidement revenus au dernier opus avec le tube déjà incontournable « Aozora », une chanson déjà jouée lors de leur tournée il y a deux ans et que nous avons été ravis de réentendre en live. Drew Goddard et Mark Hosking étaient au sommet de leur art, livrant des riffs et des mélodies incroyables, comme sur « Goliath » ou « Drone ». Ian a chanté de toutes ses forces avec cette voix qui nous donne des frissons à chaque fois qu’on l’entend, avant de remercier le public pour son enthousiasme ce soir. Chaque chanson jouée ce soir illustre parfaitement ce qu’est le son Karnivool et montre à quel point les années d’attente pour ces nouvelles chansons ont donné aux fans l’énergie nécessaire pour rendre cette soirée absolument inoubliable. « We Are » (Asymetry, 2013) et « Deadman » (Sound Awake, 2009) ont offert une nouvelle occasion aux fans de reprendre en chœur ces paroles puissantes avec Ian, qui était visiblement ému par la réaction de la foule. De toute évidence, la section rythmique, portée par Jon Stockman à la basse et Steve Judd à la batterie, nous a offert des moments à couper le souffle, avec des passages passant en un clin d’œil d’une énergie débordante à une atmosphère calme et apaisante. Après « All It Takes », le groupe a enchaîné avec le tube « Themata », une fois de plus accompagné d’un immense chœur. Pendant le concert, nous nous sommes dit que certaines chansons du groupe nous rappelaient The Ocean, et quand on sait que les deux groupes ont tourné ensemble il y a quelques années, cela ne pouvait que renforcer ce sentiment, pour notre plus grand plaisir, même si les deux groupes ont une identité musicale très différente. L’énergie dans la salle était électrique et on ne voyait pas comment ça pourrait être mieux, mais Ian a alors annoncé « Roquefort » et tout le monde a explosé, car cette chanson reste une des favorites des fans. Mais nous approchions de la fin et « New Day » a donné aux Australiens une dernière occasion de donner le meilleur d’eux-mêmes pour terminer ce concert en beauté ! Mais le public ne voulait pas que cette soirée se termine et en a redemandé, ce qu’il a obtenu assez rapidement avec le tourbillon d’émotions qu’est « Opal ». Puis « Salva » a clôturé le concert en offrant une nouvelle démonstration parfaite du talent profond qui anime le groupe. Les riffs, les rythmes et la voix nous ont donné des frissons et ont ancré dans nos esprits que Karnivool fait partie de la royauté du rock prog à ce stade de sa carrière. Cette soirée n’aurait pas pu être plus parfaite et nous avons quitté la salle la tête pleine de souvenirs qui resteront longtemps gravés dans nos mémoires.

After an unforgettable show at The Black Lab near Lille in 2024, and the release of In Verses in February after thirteen years of waiting, it was time for the australians in Karnivool to stop their european in tour in Belgium on this 25th of April 2026. De Casino in Sint-Niklaas has been sold out for a long time now, a big sign that the fans were eagerly awaiting this show. To open the night the band chose canadian artist Intervals, for a prog metal night that we could not miss. .

Lights went down in a packed venue and Intervals took the stage. First notes of « Neurogenesis » were already a sign that Aaron Marshall, the head behing the Intervals project is in top form. The last time we saw the band was in Paris in 2018, so you can imagine the pleasure of hearing new material live from Memory Palace live for the first time. The riffs from Aaron Marshall and Travis LeVrier got the crowd going with insane melodies and intense musicianship. On the rythmic side Nathan Bulla on drums and Jacob Umansky on bass were also on top form. Those prog drum and bass line clearly got our heads bangigng from start to finish. Sadly something went wrong with Aaron’s guitar during « Nootropic » but the rest of the band kept playing the track as nothing happened while Aaron tried as quick as possible to find a solution to this problem. After this song Aaron offered us the amazing riffs of « galaxy brain » before going back to The Way Forward (2017) with the huge hit « Leave No Stone ». Each song is a perfect example of how complexe music structures can coexist with a fun and hugely enternaining band. As a good example of that Nathan and Jacob did a quick Rock Paper Scissors during a guitar solo, and obviously they are keeping score while on tour. Aaron asked the crowd who was seeing Intervals for the first time and most of the crowd raised their hands. But the long time fans were so happy to see the four musicians go back to the 2012 EP In Time with the two killer tracks « Mata Hari » and « Epiphany ». These two songs have lost absolutely none of their power over the years and it’s an absolute joy for us to get to hear them again. The end is nigh but Intervals give us two more songs to round out this amazing set of instrumental prog. « chronophobia » will let the crowd bang their heads one last time and let the musicians give us and last shot of their effortless playing with still no showing off but just pure skills and enjoyment of being in front of a crowd. Trust us this show has been one we’ve been waiting for for ages and we won’t wait 8 years to see Intervals again! The band left the stage visibly happy and thanking Karnivool for inviting them on tour.
After a short break it’was time to welcome Karnivoool on stage! The crowd was packed close to the stage not to miss one bit of this night and when « Ghost » started we cleearly saw that the show was going to be a anazing night of prog rock. The sound of De Casino was absolutely cristal clear and helped enjoying even more the mastery of each musicians and the amazing voice of Ian Kenny. The new songs are already well embeded in the minds of the fans and they did not hesitate to sing it back to the band from the first to the last song. After a quick trip to the Sound Awake album with « Simple Boy » we quicly went back to the lastest release with the already huge hit ‘Aozora », a song already played on their tour two years ago and that we’ve been so happy to hear again live. Drew Goddard and Mark Hosking were on top form delivering amazing riffs and melodies, as in « Goliath » or « Drone ». Ian sung from the top of his lunks with his voice that gives us shivers every time we hear it, before thanking the crowd on being so enthousiastic tonight. Every song played tonight is a perfect showcase of what the Karnivool sound is and how the years of waiting for this news songs have given the fans the energy to make this evening absolutely unforgettable. « We Are » (Asymetry, 2013) and « Deadman » (Sound Awake, 2009) gave another chance to the fans to sing back those powerful lyrics to Ian, who was clearly moved by the response of the crowd. Obviously, the rythm section powered by Jon Stockman on bass and Steve Judd on the drums gave us absolute jaw-dropping moments with lines that changed between widely energetic to calm and soothing in the blink of an eye. After « All It Takes » the band got to the hit that is « Themata », with once again a huge choir to help them. During the set, we told ourselves that some songs of the band give us The Ocean vibes, and when you know that both bands toured together some years ago, it could not help but strenghen this feeling for our greatest pleasure, even if both bands have a very different identity musicaly. The energy in the room was electric and we could not see how it could get better, but then Ian announced « Roquefort » and everyone erupted, as this song still is an absolute fan favorite. But we were approaching the end and « New Day » gave the australians a last chance to give their absolute best to end this show on a bang! But the crowd did not want this night to get to a close and asked for more, which they got quite quickly with the emotional ride that is « Opal ». And then « Salva » ended the show with another perfect view of the talent that runs deep withing the band. The riffs, the rythms and the voice gave us shivers and cemented in our minds that Karnivool are very much prog royalty at this stage of their carrer. This night could not have been more perfect and we left the venue with our heads full of memories that will stay for a long time.
