Prévu pour le 15 mai 2026 chez Metal Blade Records / Blacklight Media Records, le sixième opus du quatuor américain Gozu, nommé tout simplement Gozu VI, était particulièrement attendu après la claque qu’avait été Remedy en 2023. Le groupe revient donc trois ans après avec un album puisant sa force dans ses heures les plus sombres.

Écrit la nuit par le frontman Marc Gaffney dans la pénombre d’un appartement miteux lors d’une période personnelle particulièrement difficile, l’album, constitué de huit titres, transpire de toutes parts la vulnérabilité du chanteur. Si l’humour décalé du groupe s’affiche dans les titres des morceaux, les paroles, elles, plongent profondément dans l’introspection de Marc.
Musicalement parlant, on nage dans du « Heavy Soul », un mélange de fuzz des années 70, de stoner old-school et de mélodies presque grunge. Produit et mixé par Benny Grotto aux Mad Oak Studios de Boston, qui ont vu passer aussi bien Aerosmith qu’Orange Goblin, le son s’avère d’une lourdeur implacable. Gozu VI s’ouvre immédiatement avec l’excellent “Corinthian Leatherface” où l’on constate un mélange d’influences de Queens of the Stone Age et des harmonies de la Motown. De son côté, le guitariste Doug Sherman s’en donne à cœur joie avec sa gratte, soutenu par une section rythmique aux petits oignons constituée de Joseph Grotto et Seth Botos, générant une belle alchimie entre les artistes.
Doug n’a pas manqué d’imposer sa patte en proposant notamment de s’inspirer du “Rough Boys” de Pete Townshend pour l’introduction de “Killer Khan”, un hommage à l’une de leurs chansons préférées. Le morceau embraye ensuite sur une vibe clairement rock sudiste en empruntant le style des groupes Allman Brothers et Marshall Tucker Band, sentant bon le whisky et les chagrins d’amour. Le fulgurant “Banacek!” surprend quant à lui par sa « vibe Iron Maiden » et par son « galop à la Steve Harris ». Ce n’est pas tout puisque l’énergie power pop de Jellyfish a également influencé l’interprétation de Marc sur ce morceau. Il va sans dire que Gozu est un groupe aux influences multiples !
A contrario de l’absurdité des titres des chansons, les textes révèlent une véritable lassitude existentielle. C’est par exemple le cas avec les très heavy “Midnight Express” et “They Did Know Karate” dont les riffs s’avèrent particulièrement massifs. Alourdi par le poids des regrets, le très lent “Corner Lariot” dégage quant à lui une poignante profondeur émotionnelle. Le disque se conclut avec les énergiques “Gimme the Lute” et “Corvette Summer”, dont la fin du premier vous donnera probablement quelques torticolis !
Gozu VI est bien plus qu’une simple collection de sons à destination des amateurs de gros riffs et de headbang puisqu’il s’agit en réalité d’un défouloir, une véritable catharsis pour Marc Gaffney et ses comparses. Avec ce nouvel opus, le quatuor bostonnais prouve qu’il est possible d’allier un groove dévastateur à des textes lourds de sens. En somme, nous avons là un album thérapeutique et brillamment interprété, parfait pour repartir de plus belle après une journée compliquée.

Scheduled for release on May 15th, 2026 via Metal Blade Records / Blacklight Media Records, the sixth album by American quartet Gozu, simply titled Gozu VI, was eagerly anticipated following the smash hit that was Remedy in 2023. The band returns three years on with an album that draws its strength from their darkest hours.
Written at night by frontman Marc Gaffney in the dim light of a shabby flat during a particularly difficult personal period, the eight-track album exudes the singer’s vulnerability from every angle. Whilst the band’s offbeat humour is evident in the track titles, the lyrics delve deep into Marc’s introspection.
Musically speaking, we’re immersed in ‘Heavy Soul’, a blend of 70s fuzz, old-school stoner and almost grunge-like melodies. Produced and mixed by Benny Grotto at Mad Oak Studios in Boston – a venue that has hosted the likes of Aerosmith and Orange Goblin – the sound is relentlessly heavy. Gozu VI opens immediately with the excellent “Corinthian Leatherface”, which blends influences from Queens of the Stone Age with Motown harmonies. For his part, guitarist Doug Sherman lets his hair down on the guitar, backed by a finely tuned rhythm section comprising Joseph Grotto and Seth Botos, creating a wonderful chemistry between the musicians.
Doug certainly made his mark, suggesting they take inspiration from Pete Townshend’s “Rough Boys” for the intro to “Killer Khan”, a tribute to one of their favourite songs. The track then shifts into a distinctly Southern rock vibe, borrowing the style of the Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band, reeking of whisky and heartbreak. The blistering “Banacek!” surprises with its “Iron Maiden vibe” and its “Steve Harris-style gallop”. That’s not all, as Jellyfish’s power-pop energy has also influenced Marc’s performance on this track. It goes without saying that Gozu is a band with multiple influences!
In contrast to the absurdity of the song titles, the lyrics reveal a genuine existential weariness. This is the case, for example, with the very heavy “Midnight Express” and “They Did Know Karate”, whose riffs prove particularly massive. Weighed down by the burden of regret, the very slow “Corner Lariot” exudes a poignant emotional depth. The album concludes with the energetic “Gimme the Lute” and “Corvette Summer”, the end of the former of which will probably leave you with a stiff neck!
Gozu VI is much more than just a collection of tracks aimed at fans of heavy riffs and headbanging; it is, in fact, an outlet, a true catharsis for Marc Gaffney and his bandmates. With this new album, the Boston-based quartet proves that it is possible to combine a devastating groove with deeply meaningful lyrics. All in all, this is a therapeutic and brilliantly performed album, perfect for bouncing back after a tough day.
