Le Métaphone accueille en cette veille de Fête de La Musique un concert exceptionnel. En effet la tournée de The Gathering en compagnie de leur chanteuse d’origine Anneke Van Giersbergen fêtant les 30 ans du mythique album Mandylion s’arrête dans le Nord! Après un concert inoubliable à Paris on ne pouvait manquer cette nouvelle occasion de voir ces morceaux en live avec le line up de l’époque dans une salle qui s’annonçait comme un écrin parfait pour accueillir le groupe néerlandais.

Pas de première partie ce soir et une salle comble pour ce concert qui commence fort avec l’arrivée des musiciens de The Gathering sur des applaudissements chaleureux d’un public aux anges de voir le groupe dans de telles conditions de proximité (on rappelle que la salle ne fait que 1000 places!). Anneke débarque sur scène également et se lance dans le magnifique « Eléanor » tiré de l’album qui sera joué dans son intégralité ce soir (si on compte l’intro « Mandylion »). De la voix aux instrumentations tout est parfait et on plonge avec délectation dans cette œuvre majeur du métal européen. René Rutten et Jelmer Wiersma nous enchantent avec leurs riffs joués à la perfection et les envolées très progressives qui marquent ce disque. Le timbre de la voix de Anneke nous colle toujours autant de frissons et sa performance vocale sur des titres comme « Fear The Sea » ou « In Motion #1 » vient nous emporter dans un tourbillon de bonheur musical. Le groupe a aussi décidé sur cette tournée de nous proposer le meilleur de sa discographie et c’est avec « On Most Surfaces (Inuït) » qu’on quitte provisoirement Mandylion pour retrouver Nightime Birds (1997). A partir du titre suivant Jelmer quitte la scène quelques pour que le son colle au mieux à la réalité du groupe à l’époque de la sortie des autres albums. Au claviers c’est Frank Boeijen qui nous émerveille sur « Broken Glass » (Souvenirs, 2003) ou le sublime « Waking Hour » (Nightime Birds, 1997) qui n’a de cesse de nous émerveiller dès qu’on l’entend. Evidemment le public écoute avec attention, à tel point qu’on entendrait les mouches voler. Côté rythmique on retrouve Hans Rutten à la batterie et Hugo Prinsen Geerligs à la basse, en forme olympique également! Les parties de « Probably Built In The Fifties » (How To Measure A Planet?, 1998) ou encore « In Motion #2) émerveilles les fans, d’ailleurs prêt à de larges applaudissements entre chaque titre. Ce retour à Mandylion signe le retour de Jelmer à la guitare pour plus de riffs envoutants. Les morceaux comme « Leaves » laissent une fois de plus éclater le talent de chaque personne sur scène et nous laissent avec des étoiles dans les yeux et des tympans comblé par tant de beauté musicale. « Sand And Mercury » et « Strange Machines » viennent mettre fin à un set d’anthologie avec une fois de plus des performances magistrales et une voix de Anneke qui semble n’avoir aucune limite en terme de beauté et de puissance. Evidemment le public ne veux pas terminer cette soirée si vite et demande un rappel. Le groupe répond à l’appel et revient avec « Travel » avant de terminer en apothéose avec peut être un de leurs titres les plus mythiques : « Saturnine » (if_then_else, 2000) qui sera accueilli par des fans en pamoison devant cette mélodie qui ne nous quitte pas depuis toutes ses années. Là encore The Gathering excellent et saluent longuement un public définitivement conquis par cette soirée digne de tous les superlatifs.
The Gathering ont offert au Métaphone ce soir un concert d’anthologie devant un public de fans au paradis de retrouver Mandylion joué avec le line up d’origine. La setlist a également fait la part belle au reste de cette discographie si forte émotionnellement et a montré à quel point ce groupe continue de marquer des générations entières avec des titres intemporels. On s’est délecté de chaque seconde et on ressort absolument émerveillé par tout le talent sur scène et envoutés par la voix sublime de Anneke, qu’on a déjà hâte de retrouver!

On the eve of Fête de la Musique, Le Métaphone is hosting an exceptional concert. The Gathering’s tour – featuring their original singer Anneke Van Giersbergen and celebrating the 30th anniversary of the legendary album *Mandylion* – is stopping off in the North! Following an unforgettable concert in Paris, we simply couldn’t miss this new opportunity to see these tracks performed live by the original line-up in a venue that promised to be the perfect setting for the Dutch band.

No support act tonight, and a packed house for this concert, which gets off to a flying start as the musicians from The Gathering take to the stage to warm applause from an audience over the moon to see the band in such an intimate setting (remember, the venue only seats 1,000!). Anneke also takes to the stage and launches into the magnificent “Eléanor”, taken from the album which will be played in its entirety tonight (if you count the intro “Mandylion”). From the vocals to the instrumentation, everything is perfect, and we immerse ourselves with delight in this major work of European metal. René Rutten and Jelmer Wiersma enchant us with their flawlessly executed riffs and the highly progressive passages that characterise this album. The timbre of Anneke’s voice still sends shivers down our spines, and her vocal performance on tracks such as “Fear The Sea” or “In Motion #1” sweeps us away in a whirlwind of musical bliss. The band have also decided on this tour to treat us to the best of their discography, and it’s with “On Most Surfaces (Inuït)” that we temporarily leave Mandylion behind to return to Nightime Birds (1997). From the next track onwards, Jelmer leaves the stage for a few moments so that the sound better reflects the band’s style at the time of the other albums’ release. On keyboards, it’s Frank Boeijen who captivates us on “Broken Glass” (Souvenirs, 2003) and the sublime “Waking Hour” (Nightime Birds, 1997), which never fails to amaze us whenever we hear it. Naturally, the audience is listening intently – so much so that you could hear a pin drop. On the rhythm side, we have Hans Rutten on drums and Hugo Prinsen Geerligs on bass, both in top form too! The sections of “Probably Built In The Fifties” (How To Measure A Planet?, 1998) and “In Motion #2” delight the fans, who are ready to give a hearty round of applause between each track. This return to Mandylion marks Jelmer’s return to the guitar for more spellbinding riffs. Tracks like “Leaves” once again showcase the talent of every member on stage, leaving us with stars in our eyes and eardrums filled with such musical beauty. “Sand And Mercury” and “Strange Machines” bring an unforgettable set to a close, featuring yet another masterful performance and Anneke’s voice, which seems to know no bounds in terms of beauty and power. Naturally, the audience didn’t want the evening to end so soon and called for an encore. The band answered the call and returned with “Travel” before finishing on a high note with perhaps one of their most legendary tracks: “Saturnine” (if_then_else, 2000), which was greeted by fans in raptures at this melody that has stayed with us all these years. Once again, The Gathering excelled and gave a lengthy bow to an audience that had been thoroughly won over by this evening, which was worthy of every superlative.
The Gathering treated the Métaphone to a concert for the ages this evening, in front of an audience of fans who were in seventh heaven to hear Mandylion performed by the original line-up. The setlist also gave pride of place to the rest of their deeply emotional discography and demonstrated just how much this band continues to leave its mark on entire generations with its timeless tracks. We revelled in every second and left absolutely awestruck by all the talent on stage and spellbound by Anneke’s sublime voice, we can’t wait to see them again!
