Emmenés par Sam Cooper, chanteur et compositeur australien, The Cloverhearts ajoute donc un nouvel album à leur discographie particulièrement fournie en à peine quelques années d’existence. Leur punk rock celtique entrainant nous embarque du début à la fin de l’opus. La cornemuse est évidemment très présente, mais la flûte apporte également un caractère fort aux compositions. Tous deux sont assurés par Casey Dillette. Certains titres sont particulièrement remarquables, à l’instar de « You’ve Got a Friend ». Déjà joué en live depuis quelques temps, nous avons pu constater qu’il est aussi efficace en live qu’en studio ! L’album festif évoque les pubs, les soirées, les fêtes, l’amitié, l’amour, la bière… Le groupe alterne ainsi les thèmes davantage liés à leur origine germanique comme « Oktoberfest (Beer is Good) », avec ceux qui évoquent davantage le côté celtique de leur musique comme « Friday at O’Malley’s Pub ». Cette dernière prend d’ailleurs de petits airs de pop punk, notamment dans le refrain très chantant. The Cloverhearts nous emmène dans un univers entre skate park et pub irlandais. On entend même des sonorités cuivrés sur « Gertrude’s Ghost The Haunting of Hafenklang ». Les rythmes effrénés emmenés par Cocky à la batterie ne cessent pas durant tout l’album, conférant un aspect rouleau compresseur à Germaniac! . Les titres sont globalement courts et efficaces.

On notera tout de même un fait décevant de cet album : sa pochette au visuel IA. Le punk a tellement de ressources en termes de DIY que l’on trouve cela dommage. Fort heureusement, on sait toute la qualité de The Cloverhearts sur scène et on a hâte de les entendre défendre cet opus en live. La formation sera d’ailleurs de passage par Lille le 10 novembre prochain, à la Brat Cave !

The Celtic punk-rock band The Cloverhearts are releasing their new album on June 26th. Germaniac! will be available via SBÄM Records. With its blend of bagpipes, flute and skate punk, this album is one to listen to on repeat as you head to this summer’s festivals!

Led by Sam Cooper, an Australian singer-songwriter, The Cloverhearts are adding yet another album to their already impressive discography, despite having been together for just a few years. Their infectious Celtic punk rock carries us along from start to finish. The bagpipes are, of course, very much to the fore, but the flute also lends a distinctive character to the tracks. Both instruments are played by Casey Dillette. Some tracks are particularly standout, such as “You’ve Got a Friend”. Having been performed live for some time now, we’ve seen that it’s just as effective live as it is in the studio! This festive album evokes pubs, nights out, parties, friendship, love, beer… The band thus alternates between themes more closely linked to their German roots, such as “Oktoberfest (Beer is Good)”, and those that evoke the Celtic side of their music, such as “Friday at O’Malley’s Pub”. The latter, incidentally, takes on a touch of pop-punk, particularly in the very catchy chorus. The Cloverhearts take us into a world somewhere between a skate park and an Irish pub. There are even brass sounds on “Gertrude’s Ghost The Haunting of Hafenklang”. The frenetic rhythms driven by Cocky on drums never let up throughout the album, giving Germaniac! a steamroller-like feel. The tracks are generally short and effective.

There is, however, one disappointing aspect of this album: its AI-generated cover art. Punk has such a wealth of DIY resources that we find this a shame. Fortunately, we know just how good The Cloverhearts are on stage, and we can’t wait to hear them perform this album live. The band will, in fact, be playing in Lille on November 10th, at the Brat Cave and they will tour Europe at the same time!
