Sobriété Subie, groupe nordiste d’indie rock DIY, sort son deuxième opus, deux ans après leur premier EP. Comme pour son prédécesseur, la pochette est réalisée par tournebouluche et est tout simplement magnifique ! Impossible donc de ne pas aller jeter une oreille sur les 6 nouveaux titres qui composent Volume 2.

Je dois avouer être assez surprise par les premières sonorités de Volume 2 avec « Days Gone ». Une surprise très positive déjà de par la qualité de ce que j’entends ! On retrouve un rock un peu old school, un chant en anglais, un mix d’indie rock, de grunge doux. On pense rapidement à des influences de vieux titres des Foo Fighters. Bob (chant, basse) répète inlassablement « days after days » et évoque une sorte de lassitude triste et mélancolique. On a le sentiment d’une vie subie, ce qui nous raccroche au nom de la formation. Puis « Fantôme » instaure une ambiance davantage post punk et même cold punk. La sonorité claire de la guitare d’Alex nous embarque dans un univers auquel on adhère instantanément. Le chant est ici en français, et on y ressent toujours une sorte de douleur, de peine, évoquant un futur sombre. « La Mer » amène ensuite des note plus tristes dans la mélodie, sur des passages voix / guitare. Ceux-ci sont en contraste avec des passages plus puissants, criés, sur lesquels la batterie de Victor vient claquer. « Bagarre » apporte encore une nouvelle corde à l’arque de Volume 2. On y entend là un mélange de cold punk énergique et de punk rock, avec des couplets particulièrement mélodiques. On est quelque part entre Syndrome 81 et Bill the Dog (dans ses titres punk rock). Cette plage est particulièrement dynamique et donne envie de foncer dans le tas, ce qui augure de jolis pogos en live ! Sobriété Subie reprend ensuite le chant en anglais avec « Shithole », titre également plus long que les précédents. On y entend même parfois des petit traits à la Johnny Mafia, mais avec toujours cette voix dont les cris donnent des frissons. Les émotions véhiculées sont fortes, puissantes et les mélodies nous y entrainent tout autant. On termine ce riche opus avec « (Where is my mind) Mon Esprit Il est Où », reprise particulièrement retravaillée des Pixies. On sent ici un titre plus lent et lourd, et totalement remis dans l’univers de Sobriété Subie.

On sent un réel travail autour des sonorités, des rythmes, des équilibres, de la composition des titres et le résultat est que l’on prend beaucoup de plaisir à écouter Volume 2 ! Les six titres sont tous aussi bons les uns que les autres, avec des influences diverses mais un vrai univers commun. On peut l’écouter en boucle avec plaisir. Clairement la sortie de votre été, voire plus ! Sobriété Subie mérite vraiment d’être écouté dans tout l’hexagone a minima, et même plus loin.

As with its predecessor, the cover art is by tournebouluche and is simply stunning! So you simply can’t help but have a listen to the six new tracks that make up Volume 2.

I must admit I’m quite surprised by the opening sounds of Volume 2 with “Days Gone”. It’s a very positive surprise, not least because of the quality of what I’m hearing! There’s a slightly old-school rock sound, vocals in English, and a mix of indie rock and soft grunge. It quickly brings to mind influences from old Foo Fighters tracks. Bob (vocals, bass) repeats “days after days” tirelessly, evoking a sort of sad, melancholic weariness. There’s a sense of a life simply endured, which ties in with the band’s name. Then “Fantôme” establishes a more post-punk, even cold-punk, atmosphere. The clear sound of Alex’s guitar draws us into a world we’re instantly drawn to. The vocals here are in French, and there’s still a sense of pain and sorrow, evoking a bleak future. ‘La Mer’ then introduces sadder notes into the melody, in the vocal and guitar passages. These contrast with more powerful, shouted passages, over which Victor’s drums crash. ‘Bagarre’ adds yet another string to the bow of Volume 2. Here we hear a blend of energetic cold punk and punk rock, with particularly melodic verses. It sits somewhere between Syndrome 81 and Bill the Dog (in their punk rock tracks). This track is particularly dynamic and makes you want to dive into the mosh pit, which bodes well for some great pogo dancing at live gigs! Sobriété Subie then returns to singing in English with “Shithole”, a track that’s also longer than the previous ones. At times, you can even hear little touches reminiscent of Johnny Mafia, though always with that voice whose screams send shivers down your spine. The emotions conveyed are intense and powerful, and the melodies draw you in just as much. We round off this rich album with ‘(Where is my mind) Mon Esprit Il est Où’, a thoroughly reworked cover of the Pixies’ track. Here, the track feels slower and heavier, and has been completely reimagined within the Sobriété Subie universe.

You can really sense the care that’s gone into the sounds, rhythms, balance and composition of the tracks, and the result is that Volume 2 is a real pleasure to listen to! The six tracks are all equally good, drawing on diverse influences yet sharing a genuine common aesthetic. You can happily listen to it on repeat. This is definitely the release of the summer.  Sobriété Subie really deserves to be heard across the whole of France, at the very least, and beyond.
