A touch of tenderness in this cruel world. That was the magic formula set to make us forget everything in the blink of an eye, suspended in time. On Saturday October 17th, Le Grand Mix had skilfully concocted this magical moment for us, one we were unlikely to forget any time soon. Two bands took to the stage for this utterly delightful evening: Ulrika Spacek, accompanied by Biche. Let’s set off on a journey through the clouds.

Biche is a band formed in 2012, hailing from the Yvelines. At the helm of the project is Alexis Fugain, as you may have guessed, the son of the famous singer-songwriter Michel Fugain. This group of friends treats us to a skilful blend of neo-psychedelia, psychedelic pop, art pop and indietronica. So, with such a diverse mix of genres, you can well imagine the gentle sounds Biche offers our delicate ears. On this evening, in the name of laid-back vibes, we certainly weren’t there for pogo dancing or feedback of any kind that would make your eardrums bleed. And, goodness me, it’s true that sometimes, let’s admit it, it feels good to switch off for a bit and just put the mad wheel of life, spinning in an endless race, on pause. Well, ‘switching off’ is easier said than done! Biche takes us on a journey, a laid-back, peaceful one, certainly, but as lively as the ribbon of a typewriter tapping out note after note without pause, inviting us to follow the thread of the story intently. A story tinged with dreamy, harmonious lyrics, effortlessly drawing us into a soft, dreamlike world. With its five members, the ensemble is perfectly in tune; each in their place, each fulfilling their role, executed with success. We move effortlessly from syrupy melodies, accompanied by rhythms of infinite suppleness, until we feel as light as tiny bits of cotton floating in the air. Biche thus offers us the most captivating of levitations, at times opening the door to a certain strangeness that is as pleasant as it is unexpected. And it is precisely this that creates the paradox of this unconventional band: a harmonious, delicate and almost reassuring sound, combined with an exotic oddity that is nonetheless curiously eccentric. It’s easy to let yourself be swept away by this world tinged with beauty and mystery, immersing us in a sound that’s as mellow as one could wish for. With their soft, calm, measured and tranquil rock, accompanied by these unusual electronic touches, our five friends have immersed us in a unique musical cocktail blending a delightful, perfectly balanced medley of sounds that are as melodious as they are ambitious, amusing and intriguing, offering us a range of emotions to everyone’s delight. With two albums to their name, including La Nuit des Perséides (released on April 26th 2019) and their latest album B.I.C.H.E. (released on February 7th 2025), Biche effortlessly and delicately delivered a forty-five-minute live set of pure pleasure, enough to soften even the oldest and most rugged of menhirs.
After kicking off the first part of the evening on a gentle note with the very cool Biche, it was Ulrika Spacek’s turn to take us on another, even more captivating auditory and visual journey. Ulrika Spacek hail from Germany, later moved to England, and formed in Berlin in 2014. The band, now based in London, came together at a party in the capital and bears a rather strange name that certainly ensures they don’t go unnoticed. This musical oddity is actually a surprising blend of the first name of Red Army Faction activist Ulrike Meinhof and that of American actress Sissy Spacek (who, amongst other roles, starred in Brian de Palma’s iconic Carrie), resulting in this unusual and amusing mash-up that was stumbled upon by chance by the band members. They were looking for a striking and offbeat combination that would evoke both Germanic and Anglo-Saxon sounds. So, that’s the backstory! Let’s now move on to what our five highly unconventional musicians had to offer. Musically, Ulrika Spacek delivers a delightful blend of various musical genres, ranging from neo-psychedelic, indie rock, psychedelic rock and art rock. And it is precisely in this sonic blend, which borders on perfection, given the astonishing precision with which they handle it whilst maintaining their originality, that everything flows with boundless excess. With their soaring melodies and intoxicating rhythms, Ulrika Spacek have a real knack for taking us on a truly captivating auditory and visual journey! Straddling the line between Radiohead, Sonic Youth and others of a similar ilk, they deliver an endless array of spatial and galactic sounds, underpinned by poetic lyrics of great beauty. In short, Ulrika Spacek are a band that lift your spirits! The guitar melodies venture towards beautifully crafted, serene drum rhythms, accompanied by a lively and captivating bass line, all tinged with cleverly placed electronic sounds. No further description is needed: the five multi-talented musicians of Ulrika Spacek even enjoy, some of them, at least, switching up their means of sonic expression to offer their audience even more pleasantly crafted sensations; an audience that has been gently won over by the finesse, dreaminess and sensitivity of their music. For how can one not speak of sensitivity when listening to their tracks, as well as the visual spectacle on stage, with a thousand lights and videos projected in the background, bathing the soul of Ulrika Spacek in an entity magically bound together as one. A performance of pure beauty, blending sound and light. Following five albums, the most recent of which is Expo (released on February 6th 2026), accompanied by EXPO, REMIXED, a live album Live to 388, NYC, an EP Suggestive Listening E.P. and a fine collection of singles, Ulrika Spacek treated us to a generous and impressive live performance, blending grace and sensuality in an hour and twenty minutes of auditory and visual delight. It was enough to keep us floating on a high for quite some time after the end of this magnificent evening…
