The doors to the Grand Mix swing open, as do those of its charming club. The crowd at the bar is growing restless, quietly but surely, in anticipation of what is soon to prove to be a colourful evening. You could sense that the fun and catchy riffs wouldn’t be long in coming. Indeed, Bella and the Bizarre, a band from Berlin formed in 2022, were soon ready to take to the stage to play their garage rock, sharp, punchy and, at times, terribly languid. And it is this skilful blend of soft marshmallow and pink sweets, seasoned with a handful of fiery chillies, that gives Bella and the Bizarre all their charm and exoticism. Bella Khan (Amabelle Anjum Ahmad Khan) on vocals and rhythm guitar, daughter of King Khan, whose real name is Arish Ahmad, originally from Montreal, settled in Berlin in 2005 and played in bands such as The Almighty Defenders, The Black Jaspers, King Khan and His Shrines and King Khan & The BBQ Show. She was inevitably immersed in garage rock from a very young age thanks to the world her father introduced her to, which was pleasantly tinged with garage rock and spiritual jazz. Accompanied by her “Bizarre” band, Bella Khan and her bunch of lovable madcaps began to really let rip with their garage rock riffs, at times verging on old-school pop ’n’ roll, in a style all of their own, blending smooth melodies with catchy rhythms. Bella Khan effortlessly strung together guitar riffs and melodies, with her vocals layered over them in perfect harmony, accompanied by a delightfully mesmerising bass line followed by rousing drums. At times, the guitar and bass would even join in, singing together in unison or in canon. With Bella and the Bizarre, at times you feel as though you’ve been plunged straight into the dead of night in a hotel lost in the middle of nowhere, with subdued red lights, against a backdrop of whisky and gentle smoke wafting through the air. It’s so smooth, syncopated that it becomes almost piquant and dangerous. Or rather, strangely, dangerously good. A blend of cactus with a caramel centre that you’re ready to let prick you. With an album of the same name, Bella and the Bizarre (released on November 28th 2024), Bella and the Bizarre treated us to a fifty-minute live set of pure garage rock, filled with warmth and good cheer!

2013, Los Angeles, California. Death Valley Girls emerged with their garage rock, garage psych and psychedelic rock,as strange, spellbinding, provocative and ambitious as it was. Ready to reveal what they had kept hidden in their most creative thoughts, the project came to life to invite us into the darkness of their delicate souls. Having been nicely warmed up by Bella and the Bizarre, the audience at the Grand Mix club was naturally keen for their share of turbulent and off-the-wall psychedelic sounds. And this was the perfect role for Death Valley Girls: to leave us hanging upside down like a swarm of bats in a gloomy, winding and utterly bewitching cellar. The perfect balance between their girly side and the darkness they were ready to reveal to us. With Bonnie Bloomgarden (organ/Juno 60 and vocals), Laena Myers (guitar and vocals), Bailey Chapman (drums) and their bassist on this tour, the evening was bound to be as electrifying as it was intoxicating. The psychedelic sounds of the organ and Bonnie Bloomgarden’s voice, as beautiful as it is almost childlike, the sultry guitar riffs of Laena Myers, with her magnificent pink hair, and the tangy sweetness of a warm, captivating bass line backed by Bailey Chapman’s driving rhythms, deliver a striking cocktail of raw energy brimming with positive vibes, brought to the fore by melodies that are as charming as they are powerful. In a world all of their own, somewhere between witchcraft and nature, Death Valley Girls invite us into a mysticism that celebrates life, joy and our animal friends. Their emotionally charged sound simply couldn’t leave us unmoved; it struck us right in the heart, all with that touch of garage rock that really gets under your skin, such is the zing of their tracks. It’s impossible not to nod your head along and feel the urge to dance with them – they’re just that good. A bold psychedelic sound that embraces a deliberately pronounced 60s vibe, blending biting riffs with fierce guitar solos. The perfect magic formula from our lovely bubblegum witches created that bubble of comfort we so desperately needed during this cold season to spend this magnificent evening in their company. With six albums, including their latest, Welcome to Earth (released just on October 9th), a live album, Levitation Sessions: Live from the Astral Plane, and a few singles, the girls from Death Valley Girls treated us to a cracking evening of an hour’s madness, with their fantastic music, their zest for life and their delightful sympathy (for the devil…)!
