The album opens with a long intro that plunges us into a mystical atmosphere; then a distant fade-in of tremolo guitar emerges, and in the blink of an eye, you’re propelled into an abrasive and unsettling wall of sound. “Ominous Path (to the Nightside)” shows us the way and prepares us for the rest of the journey. This progressive track, lasting almost 7 minutes and featuring a wide range of intensities, sweeps us into a sinister trance. After a long outro, the band concludes with a sustained chord, which morphs into a long feedback loop. A sampled voice over the top heralds the transition to the second track, “Abyssum Drakon”. With cavernous vocals, rasping backing screams and ever-present reverb creating the impression of being in a vast stone gallery, the band invites us to their black mass. The rest of the album follows this pattern, with each track developing its own distinct universe. Their highly varied and sufficiently lengthy compositions allow the band to explore different atmospheres within a single track. The halfway point is marked by ‘…of Otherworldly Abhorrations’, an instrumental track that flirts with funeral doom in certain passages, offering us a brief respite before we continue our epic journey. Guided by a carefully considered artistic vision, the samples and various production effects throughout the album serve to weave the tracks together into a coherent soundscape, offering listeners a continuous narrative across the work. Whilst the music industry is moving towards heavier, denser productions, Sépulcre presents a work with a much more airy production, leaving room for greater dynamics within the tracks.
With Cryptic Temple of Otherworldly Abhorrations, forget compilations of heavy, mindless riffs: Sépulcre presents us with narrative and atmospheric death metal in the form of long, progressive tracks inspired by black metal. The soundscape, created by the choice of samples accompanying the tracks, as well as the mastering and the overall mix of the album, perfectly serve the band’s artistic vision, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in their grim and cruel world.
