#Live : Insurgent + Mentally Vexed + Acrimony @ Chez Oscaar, Marly – 30/10/2026

The second Sounding Shivers team out and about on October 30th,is heading to La Flac in Marly (Chez Oscaar) to catch Insurgent, supported by Mentally Vexed and Acrimony! An incredible venue, a local line-up, it’s almost scary, because we all know this is going to be a cracker! Three bands for a small price, but with big ambitions. Barely enough time to say hello to everyone before the gig kicks off!

Review and pictures by Rémi

Acrimony kicked off the evening. The old-school death metal band, with their gritty riffs oozing hardcore, stepped in for the originally scheduled stomp/hardcore act: No One Wins. The drummer, having sustained an injury, was unable to perform on stage (but he went ahead and played in the mosh pit anyway, on the slippery tiled floor at Oscaar’s!). I mentioned them to you not long ago, Acrimony sound absolutely massive. This time round, the crowd is a bit more engaged and is slowly getting into the swing of things. This recent NGHC project takes on a whole new dimension tonight, darker and more punchy. The sound is good, a notch above the Lille gig, which really lets you pick up on the nuances and just how polished the tracks are. We’re not just dealing with a bunch of hardcore lads playing death metal, but a band that has truly grasped the very essence of the genre. You might expect the breaks to be simple and repetitive, designed to get the angry kids moshing as hard as possible. Not at all, Acrimony crafts its compositions with the same meticulous care that BTK used to plan his crimes. It’s heavy, sharp and extremely precise. The floor starts to feel slippery. Bathed in an eerie red light, the set comes to an end. What’s to follow promises to be epic!

Quick stage change, the place is packed. Yes, because at Oscaar’s, that’s where FLAC is held, it’s in the living room and dining room that all hell breaks loose! Mentally Vexed played a surprise first set right here, right at the start of 2026, taking everyone by surprise! This brand-new, fresh-faced band features members from Kill For Peace, Miles To Go and even the bassist from Heure Bleue (yes, yes, do give them a listen!). An EP is in the works, you won’t be disappointed! This time, the set is much longer, but just as energetic. The crowd got into it straight away; things went off the rails right from the start of the set. Mentally Vexed’s style is a distillation of the very best of what was going on between 1990 and 2010. You’ll find the groove of Crown of Thornz (obvious given the band’s name) combined with the energy of Backtrack or Down To Nothing, all with a Northern Hardcore twist. The tracks are simple, but incredibly effective. Mimil lets rip with his best ‘Stay calm’ chants, the bass/guitar combo churns out fierce melodies, and the rhythm section is spot-on, getting everyone gathered in Marly dancing and jumping. We switch from side-to-side to two-step with incredible fluidity, and the stage diving is as if a stun grenade had been thrown right into the middle of the venue. Pierre’s (NGHC hero) little stunt just before the end of the set really rubs salt into the wound! Marly is very much alive. I know I say this all the time, but keep an eye on the bands that are making a name for themselves – we’re nowhere near the end of it yet!

After a quick mop-up during the last break, Insurgent take to the stage. Just like that, without warning! The venue fills up again in time for the first track. A new EP, Not the Peace (Useless Pride Record), has just been released. At the previous gig, Insurgent played their old set one last time. Tonight we’re treated to the new tracks. Well, as a natural follow-up to ‘Bring the Sword’ and Against Sorrow and World’s Misfortune, the three new tracks really hit the spot live. La Flac is hit by a deluge of melodic, catchy riffs. Both on stage and in the audience, people are jumping, cheering and giving it their all! A special mention goes to the kindness of the audience, who are jostling for space in every corner of this cramped venue. Everyone is looking out for their neighbour. That’s the effect Insurgent has on stage. Strength and gentleness, pain and emotion, it’s all beautifully woven together and perfectly balanced. Insurgent reaffirms their commitment to delivering intense, electrifying gigs, whether here at Oscaar, on bigger stages such as at Betizfest, or on the roads across Europe! In fact, you’ll find them all over the place as the year draws to a close, notably sharing the bill with November on quite a few dates! In short, whether it’s tender or brutal, there’s something for everyone. Hugo’s presence on stage orchestrates the back-and-forth with passion. Behind him, the energy is controlled yet infectious. Each member expresses themselves and moves about in perfect harmony, it’s a joy to watch!

Up north, we really do have an incredible variety of bands and venues. This evening is yet more proof of that! Hardcore is popping up everywhere, you’ll be hearing plenty more about it. I’d like to extend my warmest thanks to La Flac and the ghost of Taste Of Mind for their hospitality and the invitation.
