Direction Tourcoing et Le Grand Mix en ce jour d’Halloween pour un concert qu’on attendait depuis pas mal de temps: celui de Black Country, New Road. Les anglais sont de passage dans la métropole accompagnés de l’américaine Platonica Erotica. La grande salle du Grand Mix est déjà bien pleine lorsque nous arrivons, signe que beaucoup sont aussi impatients que nous. En ce jour si particulier de l’année certains spectateurs, ainsi qu’une partie de l’équipe de la salle se sont déguisés pour l’occasion. Le ton est donnée et nous voilà fin prêts pour une nouvelle soirée musicale.

On commence donc avec Platonica Erotica aka Hannah qui va nous présenter son univers accompagnée par ses claviers et ses sons programmés. La chanteuse envoute une grande partie de la salle avec ses morceaux que l’on sent très personnels. Impossible de ne pas penser à Lana Del Rey quand on entend l’artiste américaine! Autant sa voix que sa gestuelle font écho à sa compatriote. La douceur de sa voix couplée aux sons doux des claviers emporte et nous montre tout le talent de la musicienne. Certains titres se font un peu plus énergiques mais on reste tout de même dans un univers très doux, où parfois les paroles viennent fortement contraster avec la fragilité qui émane des compositions. La chanteuse s’étonne du peu de déguisements dans les premiers rangs et comprend vite que Halloween est une fête beaucoup plus célébrée aux Etats Unis. Après un set d’une petite demi-heure tout en chansons doucement majestueuses, elle nous quitte sur un dernier titre qui finira de convaincre le public que le talent est définitivement présent chez Hannah.

 

Il est temps d’accueillir Black Country, New Road qui ont soufflé tout le monde avec leur dernier album en date Ants From Up There, sorti l’an dernier. C’est sur le mythique « The Simpsons » que le groupe entre sur scène, et on comprendra très vite pourquoi ce morceau a été choisi. En effet une grande partie de la formation s’est grimée en personnage issu de l’univers de Matt Groening. Homer, le Vendeur de BD, Flanders… ils sont tous là! C’est parti pour un set de post rock de haute volée où dès le premier morceau la flute traversière fait une entrée fracassante. Ici, de nombreux instruments qu’on entend que trop rarement seront de la partie. Le saxophone, la flute et l’accordéon apportent à la musique des anglais une véritable identité. Les rythmes sont chaloupés et finalement très prog. Oubliez les morceaux de trois minutes, ce soir ce sont de longues pièces pleines de signatures rythmiques changeantes aux quelles nous auront droit. Chacun des six musicien.ne.s se donne à fond pour nous proposer le meilleur du post rock. On navigue dans leur discographie avec comme ponctuation quelques apparitions du générique si connu de la série citée plus haut. L’humeur autant sur scène que dans le public est excellente et on sent le groupe ravi de jouer devant un public aussi attentif. On ne voit pas le temps passer et on se laisse submerger par la maestria qui s’exprime devant nos yeux. Chaque membre de la formation ou presque à l’occasion de s’illustrer au chant, et ce mélange de voix masculines et féminines est un pur plaisir pour les oreilles. On saluera la performance folle de Charlie Wayne à la batterie, qui, en véritable Spider Man des baguettes, aura toute la soirée offert son meilleur avec un son entre post et jazz qui aura conquis tout le public de Tourcoing! Après un set unique et majestueux c’est sur le dernier titre de cette magnifique soirée d’Halloween, que le groupe donne tout pour nous montrer une dernière fois que de multiples sonorités se mêlent dans leurs compositions tout en formant un tout qui fait briller nos yeux et sourire nos tympans. Les musicien.ne.s quittent la scène après de très longs applaudissements, visiblement ravis de l’accueil qui leur a été réservé ce soir.

Black Country, New Road ont été fidèle à leur réputation ce soir! Déguisés pour faire honneur à la soirée du 31 octobre, ils n’ont pas oublié de montrer que douceur et post rock ne font qu’un. La prestation est clairement une des meilleures qu’on a pu voir cette année et on sent que le public en aurait bien pris un peu plus. On imagine très bien le groupe revenir rapidement pour une nouvelle date tant l’accueil a été chaleureux et l’écoute parfaite. En tout cas, on vous l’assure on va vite se replonger dans la discographie de ce groupe unique qui nous a fait totalement chavirer!

We’re heading to Tourcoing and Le Grand Mix on Halloween day for a concert we’ve been waiting for: Black Country, New Road. The English band are in town accompanied by Platonica Erotica from the USA. Le Grand Mix venue was already packed when we arrived, a sign that many people were as impatient as we were. On this special day of the year, some of the audience and some of the venue’s staff have dressed up for the occasion. The tone was set and we were all ready for another musical evening.

So we begin with Platonica Erotica aka Hannah, who presents her world accompanied by her keyboards and programmed sounds. The singer captivates most of the room with her highly personal songs. It’s impossible not to think of Lana Del Rey when you hear the American artist! Her voice and body language echo those of her compatriot. The softness of her voice, coupled with the gentle sounds of the keyboards, is captivating and shows us just how talented this musician is. Some tracks are a little more energetic, but we’re still in a very gentle world, where the lyrics sometimes contrast sharply with the fragility emanating from the compositions. The singer was surprised to see so few people in fancy dress in the first few rows and quickly realised that Halloween is much more celebrated in the United States. After a half-hour set of softly majestic songs, she leaves us with a final track that convinces the audience that Hannah‘s talent is definitely there.

It’s time to welcome Black Country, New Road, who blew everyone away with their latest album Ants From Up There, released last year. The band take to the stage to the legendary ‘The Simpsons’, and it’s easy to see why this song was chosen. Indeed, most of the band dressed up as characters from Matt Groening’s universe. Homer, the Comic Book guy, Flanders… they’re all there! It’s off to a high-flying post-rock set, with the transverse flute making a stunning entrance from the very first track. A whole host of instruments that are all too rarely heard are also on the bill. The saxophone, flute and accordion give their music a real identity. The rhythms are swaying and ultimately very prog. Forget the three-minute tracks, tonight we’ll be treated to long pieces full of changing rhythmic signatures. Each of the six musicians gives their all to bring us the very best of post rock. We’ll be browsing through their discography, punctuated by a few appearances of the famous theme tune from the aforementioned series. The mood both on stage and in the audience is excellent, and the band are delighted to be playing to such an attentive audience. Time just flew by, and you were overwhelmed by the mastery on display. Almost every member of the band has the opportunity to shine on vocals, and this mix of male and female voices is a real eye-opener. Charlie Wayne‘s crazy performance on drums was a real Spider Man of drumsticks, and he gave us his best all evening, with a sound somewhere between post and jazz that won over the whole Tourcoing audience! After a unique and majestic set, it was on the last track of this magnificent Halloween evening that the band gave their all to show us one last time that their compositions blend multiple sounds to form a whole that makes our eyes shine and our eardrums smile. The musicians leave the stage to rapturous applause, clearly delighted with the reception they have received this evening.

Black Country, New Road lived up to their reputation this evening! Disguised in honour of 31 October, they didn’t forget to show that sweetness and post-rock are one and the same. The performance was clearly one of the best we’ve seen this year, and you could sense that the audience would have liked a bit more. We can well imagine the band returning quickly for another date, such was their warm welcome and perfect listening skills. In any case, we can assure you that we’ll soon be diving back into the discography of this unique band, who totally blew us away!
