Veille de jour férié, c’est le 30 avril 2026, dans le cadre de leur The Time Was Tour 2026 incluant pas moins de neuf dates françaises, que le légendaire groupe britannique Wishbone Ash a de nouveau fait escale à Lille. Deux ans après leur dernier passage dans la métropole, ils posent cette fois-ci leurs valises au Splendid pour tenir cette nouvelle célébration du rock au rythme d’une généreuse setlist.

Fondé en 1969, soit 57 ans plus tôt, Wishbone Ash eut un succès retentissant au cours des années 70, notamment grâce à leur album Argus (1972), disque qui fut par la suite multi platine. Mélangeant hard rock, blues, rock progressif et jazz, le combo anglais est considéré comme pionnier pour avoir introduit les twin guitars (deux guitaristes solistes), ce qui a inspiré de nombreuses formations (Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc.). Après toutes ces années, le groupe continue d’être très actif sur scène pour le plus grand bonheur de ses fans. En avril 2026, nous retrouvons toujours à la barre Andy Powell, chanteur/guitariste et seul membre originel aujourd’hui, entouré du bassiste Bob Skeat et du guitariste Mark Abrahams ainsi que du dernier arrivé et batteur Windsor McGilvray.
Wishbone Ash entame son set avec « Bona Fide » de l’album éponyme de 2002. À savoir, la setlist de ce The Time Was Tour 2026 ne fera pas la part belle aux dernières sorties de la formation mais s’inscrit dans la continuité du concept « Wishlist » du groupe, c’est-à-dire en proposant des setlists élaborées à partir des morceaux choisis par leurs plus fidèles fans. Enchaînant avec le sourire sur « Blowin’ Free » (Argus) et « Enigma » (Bona Fide), on ressent aisément le plaisir palpable des artistes à être sur scène. Sentiment partagé par le public qui offre des applaudissements nourris aux britanniques. Le groupe affiche une forme olympique et continue l’exploration de son univers avec les hymnes intemporels « The King Will Come », « Warrior » et « Throw Down the Sword » issus d’Argus, le tout soutenu par une section rythmique sans faille de Bob à la basse et Windsor à la batterie.
Si l’essence même d’un concert de Wishbone Ash réside dans ces twin guitars, il va sans dire que les grattes étaient menées par des mains de maîtres. Le duo formé par le charismatique fondateur Andy Powell et le virtuose Mark Abrahams offre un show de haute volée. Les nombreux soli, où les deux guitaristes se répondent et s’entrelacent avec une fluidité et une harmonie déconcertantes (notamment sur « Throw Down the Sword »), ont littéralement captivé l’ensemble de l’auditoire.
Après le magnifique « Errors of My Way » (tiré de leur premier album éponyme Wishbone Ash, 1970), le groupe invite maintenant sur scène ses « bons amis de Calais », Hervé et Perrine, du duo Mellow Acoustic. Cette invitation fait écho à la fameuse convention de fans AshCon 2025 à Chester (Royaume-Uni), où le duo français s’était illustré avec leur formation French Connection. Ce soir, ils livrent tous ensemble deux superbes chansons : « Wings of Desire » (Strange Affair, 1991) et « Dreams Outta Dust » (Clan Destiny, 2006). Un pur moment de partage entre amis !
Dans une dernière ligne droite, Wishbone Ash interprète l’instrumental « F.U.B.B. » (There’s the Rub, 1974), suivi de « (In All Of My Dreams) You Rescue Me » (New England, 1976) et de l’excellent « Living Proof » (Just Testing, 1980), ce dernier ayant bien fait balancer les têtes parmi les spectateurs. L’un des sommets de la soirée a notamment été atteint avec les longues envolées de l’incontournable « Phoenix » où Mark ira même, seul à jouer, jusqu’à ne délivrer qu’un infime murmure de sa guitare avant de repartir de plus belle. Le concert se conclut par les rappels de l’énergique « Jail Bait » (Pilgrimage, 1971) et du plus serein « Peace » (Bona Fide).
À l’issue des quasi deux heures de show, Wishbone Ash aura parcouru de façon non exhaustive une partie de son immense carrière en faisant vibrer les murs du Splendid au rythme de son rock légendaire dans une ambiance bon enfant. Sans surprise également, la technique est toujours au rendez-vous à tous les niveaux et Andy et ses comparses semblent bien partis pour avoir encore de nombreuses années de concerts devant eux !

On the eve of a public holiday, 30 April 2026, as part of their The Time Was Tour 2026 – which included no fewer than nine French dates – the legendary British band Wishbone Ash returned to Lille. Two years after their last visit to the city, they set up camp at the Splendid this time to host this new celebration of rock with a generous setlist.

Founded in 1969, 57 years ago, Wishbone Ash enjoyed resounding success during the 1970s, notably thanks to their album Argus (1972), which went on to become multi-platinum. Blending hard rock, blues, progressive rock and jazz, the English band is considered a pioneer for introducing twin guitars (two lead guitarists), which inspired numerous bands (Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc.). After all these years, the band continues to be very active on stage, much to the delight of their fans. In April 2026, Andy Powell, singer/guitarist and the band’s sole remaining original member, is still at the helm, flanked by bassist Bob Skeat and guitarist Mark Abrahams, as well as the latest addition, drummer Windsor McGilvray.
Wishbone Ash kick off their set with ‘Bona Fide’ from their 2002 self-titled album. It’s worth noting that the setlist for this The Time Was Tour 2026 won’t give prominence to the band’s latest releases but is in keeping with the group’s “Wishlist” concept, meaning it features setlists compiled from tracks chosen by their most loyal fans. Moving on with a smile to ‘Blowin’ Free’ (Argus) and ‘Enigma’ (Bona Fide), one can easily sense the artists’ palpable delight at being on stage. A feeling shared by the audience, who reward the British band with rapturous applause. The band are in top form and continue to explore their musical universe with the timeless anthems “The King Will Come”, “Warrior” and “Throw Down the Sword” from Argus, all backed by a flawless rhythm section of Bob on bass and Windsor on drums.
While the very essence of a Wishbone Ash concert lies in those twin guitars, it goes without saying that the guitars were in the hands of masters. The duo formed by the charismatic founder Andy Powell and the virtuoso Mark Abrahams put on a top-class show. The numerous solos, in which the two guitarists responded to and intertwined with each other with disconcerting fluidity and harmony (particularly on ‘Throw Down the Sword’), literally captivated the entire audience.
Following the magnificent ‘Errors of My Way’ (from their eponymous debut album Wishbone Ash, 1970), the band now invites their ‘good friends from Calais’, Hervé and Perrine, from the duo Mellow Acoustic, onto the stage. This invitation echoes the famous AshCon 2025 fan convention in Chester (UK), where the French duo had made a name for themselves with their band French Connection. Tonight, they all perform two superb songs together: “Wings of Desire” (Strange Affair, 1991) and “Dreams Outta Dust” (Clan Destiny, 2006). A pure moment of sharing amongst friends!
In the final stretch, Wishbone Ash perform the instrumental ‘F.U.B.B.’ (There’s the Rub, 1974), followed by “(In All Of My Dreams) You Rescue Me” (New England, 1976) and the excellent “Living Proof” (Just Testing, 1980), the latter having the audience headbanging in no time. One of the highlights of the evening came during the long, soaring passages of the unmissable ‘Phoenix’, where Mark, playing solo, even went so far as to produce nothing but a faint whisper from his guitar before launching into the song with renewed vigour. The concert concluded with encores of the energetic ‘Jail Bait’ (Pilgrimage, 1971) and the more serene “Peace” (Bona Fide).
By the end of the nearly two-hour show, Wishbone Ash had offered a taste of their vast career, making the walls of the Splendid tremble to the beat of their legendary rock in a friendly atmosphere. Unsurprisingly, their technical prowess was on full display across the board, and Andy and his bandmates look set to have many more years of touring ahead of them!
