Comme à leur habitude Mohammed Dali nous donnent rendez-vous à La Malterie pour une date sous le signe de la découverte et des coups de coeur. Au programme le trance rock de !AYYA!, l’ovni musical Umuru et le groupe annoncé en surprise NCY. C’est donc prêts pour une belle dose de musique que nous nous rendons dans la salle lilloise bien connue.

C’est dans une salle déjà bien remplis que les trois musiciens de NCY débarquent sur scène en annonçant qu’ils viennent de Nancy! Nous voilà partis dans un bel ensemble de guitares dansantes à souhait, avec de petites influences surf rock ça et là et des rythmiques enjouées qui viennent sublimer le tout. Après un premier titre très efficace, le batteur nous annonce qu’il s’agit la de leur tout premier concert! Et autant vous dire qu’on a déjà à faire à un groupe bien en place, et, lorsqu’on apprend un peu plus tard qu’ils jouent après seulement quelques répétitions leurs quatre premières compositions ensemble, on est encore plus bluffé par ce qui se déroule devant nos yeux. Chaque titre nous colle le sourire et nous fait déjà remuer pendant une grosse vingtaine de minutes. Le trio oscille entre rock et pop avec brio et laisse éclater son talent sur scène. Le set est certes rapide mais nous laisse avec plein de jolies émotions musicales. On a clairement vu une formation éclore devant nos yeux ce soir et on espère fort que ce premier concert de NCY n’est que le début d’une belle aventure qu’on vous encourage à suivre de près.
On enchaine rapidement avec Umuru. Les lumières se baissent et Noé Zetlaoui se lance dans son mythique jeu de cymbale à l’archet. Le son est unique et enveloppe toute la salle. Pendant ce temps Raphaël Foulon attrape son violoncelle et commence doucement à en jouer. Lorsque le jeu de batterie redevient plus classique, Raphaël transforme son instrument en véritable guitare, en le tenant comme tel, et booste son jeu avec un tas de pédales d’effets. Le son est saisissant et nous rappelle à quel point leur concert au Grand Mix il y a quelques mois nous avait marqué. Le duo est en parfaite osmose et leur jeu face à face renforce l’immersion dans leur musique entre post rock et et psyché. Le public écoute avec attention envouté par la prestation du duo lillois. Il faut dire que chaque morceau, long, laisse des plages créatives assez dingues qui font évoluer constamment les compositions. Le duo s’est visiblement lancé comme défi de croquer dans un piment au fil du set et on sent que l’expérience n’est pas forcément agréable! Un membre de l’orga viendra d’ailleurs nourrir Noé pendant qu’il joue avec des mets bien plus doux pour le palais, ce qui fera bien rire le public. L’ambiance est excellente et le groupe joue devant un public aux anges devant une prestation de ce niveau dans de telles conditions. Au fil du set Raphaël nous montre qu’il a fait sauter toutes les préconceptions que l’on peut avoir d’un violoncelliste en l’utilisant à son plein potentiel et sous tous les angles. Le musique du groupe continue de nous envouter et nous laisse bouche bée jusqu’à la dernière note qui laissera le public exulter une dernière fois et signifier au groupe à quel point ils nous ont tous et toutes marqué durablement ce soir. Les deux musiciens remercient l’orga et le public pour l’accueil avant de laisser la place à l’ultime groupe de la soirée. On le savait déjà mais une chose est sûre on vous reparlera d’Umuru dans nos lignes dès que possible!
Retour à un groupe nancéen avec !AYYA! et leur trance rock, on saura d’ailleurs que le public de Nancy est venu en nombre ce soir profiter de cette date lilloise. C’est parti pour une avalanche de décibels, et ça n’est pas une métaphore car le son est un tout petit peu trop fort à notre goût au début du set. Mais du côté des musiciens on a à faire à deux musiciens au sommet de leur art. Impossible de ne pas penser un peu à La Jungle lorsqu’on ressent l’énergie du groupe. Le son est lui un peu différent mais déborde comme chez le groupe belge d’une énergie folle qui fait bouger l’intégralité du public présent ce soir. Ce qui impressionne aussi c’est que le batteur du groupe s’occupe aussi des sons de synthés, mais on ne parle pas ici de deux parties distinctes mais bien de plusieurs fois où les deux instruments sont joués en même temps! Coté guitare les riffs sont taillés pour nous faire danser, et ça sera clairement le cas. Le rock du groupe vient nous attraper pour ne plus nous lâcher jusqu’à la fin du set. Le duo excelle en tout points et donne au public une belle démonstration de ce dont ils sont capables. On vibre, on danser et on sourit, signe que la soirée ne pouvait pas mieux se terminer. Leur set file à une vitesse folle grâce à des titres énergiques à souhait et enthousiasmants. On se délecte de chaque rythmique et de chaque riff jusqu’à ce que le groupe nous annone qu’on arrive à la fin du set et nous voilà prêts à laisser le dernier titre nous donner une dernière occasion de se trémousser. !AYYA! quittent la scène en ayant remercié tout le monde et en promettant de revenir nous voir dès que possible. Une bien belle découverte live qui nous laisse, là aussi, avec l’envie de suivre la formation nancéenne de près!
On quitte la salle ravit par cette belle soirée de musique où les découvertes et coups de coeur ont été légions. Un mélange des genres qui montre encore une fois que les petites salles de concert regorgent de pépites à découvrir et qu’on n’a pas fini de vous en parler! Une soirée comme on les adore!

As usual, Mohammed Dali have invited us to La Malterie for an evening of new discoveries and favourite acts. On the line-up: the trance rock of !AYYA!, the musical enigma Umuru, and the surprise act NCY. So, ready for a good dose of music, we head to the well-known Lille venue.

It was to a packed venue that the three musicians from NCY took to the stage, announcing that they were from Nancy! And off we went with a lovely set of wonderfully lively guitar riffs, with hints of surf rock here and there and upbeat rhythms that really brought the whole thing to life. After a very effective opening track, the drummer announced that this was actually their very first gig! And let me tell you, we’re already dealing with a band that’s well and truly on their feet, and when we learn a little later that they’re playing their first four compositions together after just a few rehearsals, we’re even more blown away by what’s unfolding before our eyes. Every track puts a smile on our faces and has us dancing for a good twenty minutes. The trio switches between rock and pop with flair and lets their talent shine on stage. The set is certainly short but leaves us with plenty of lovely musical moments. We’ve clearly seen a band blossom before our eyes tonight, and we very much hope that this first NCY gig is just the start of a great adventure that we encourage you to follow closely.
We move straight on to Umuru. The lights dim and Noé Zetlaoui launches into his legendary performance of playing the cymbals with a bow. The sound is unique and envelops the entire venue. Meanwhile, Raphaël Foulon picks up his cello and begins to play it softly. When the drumming returns to a more conventional style, Raphaël transforms his instrument into a proper guitar, holding it as such, and boosts his playing with a host of effects pedals. The sound is striking and reminds us just how much their concert at the Grand Mix a few months ago had left a lasting impression on us. The duo are in perfect harmony and their face-to-face performance deepens the immersion in their music, which lies somewhere between post-rock and psychedelia. The audience listens intently, spellbound by the performance of the Lille-based duo. It must be said that each track, being quite long, features some pretty wild creative passages that keep the compositions constantly evolving. The duo have clearly set themselves the challenge of biting into a chilli pepper throughout the set, and you can tell the experience isn’t exactly pleasant! A member of the organising team even comes over to feed Noé while he plays, offering him food that’s far gentler on the palate, which has the audience in stitches. The atmosphere is excellent and the band plays to an audience in seventh heaven at a performance of this calibre in such conditions. Throughout the set, Raphaël shows us that he has shattered every preconception we might have about a cellist by playing the instrument to its full potential and from every angle. The band’s music continues to captivate us and leaves us speechless right up to the very last note, which sends the audience into raptures one final time and lets the band know just how deeply they have touched us all this evening. The two musicians thank the organisers and the audience for the warm welcome before making way for the final band of the evening. We already knew it, but one thing is certain: we’ll be writing about Umuru again in our columns as soon as possible!
Back to a band from Nancy with !AYYA! and their trance rock; indeed, it’s clear that the Nancy crowd has turned out in force tonight to enjoy this Lille gig. Here we go for an avalanche of decibels – and that’s no metaphor, as the sound is just a tad too loud for our liking at the start of the set. But as for the musicians, we’re dealing with two musicians at the top of their game. It’s impossible not to think a little of La Jungle when you feel the band’s energy. The sound is slightly different, but, just like with the Belgian band, it’s bursting with a wild energy that gets the entire audience moving tonight. What’s also impressive is that the band’s drummer also handles the synths, but we’re not talking about two separate parts here—rather, there are several moments where both instruments are played at the same time! On the guitar front, the riffs are tailor-made to get us dancing, and that’s exactly what happens. The band’s rock grabs hold of us and doesn’t let go until the end of the set. The duo excels in every respect and gives the audience a fine demonstration of what they’re capable of. We’re buzzing, dancing and smiling – a sure sign that the evening couldn’t have ended any better. Their set flies by at breakneck speed thanks to tracks that are as energetic and rousing as you could wish for. We savour every beat and every riff until the band announces that we’re reaching the end of the set, and we’re ready to let the final track give us one last chance to dance. !AYYA! leave the stage after thanking everyone and promising to come back and see us as soon as possible. A truly wonderful live discovery that leaves us, once again, keen to follow this band from Nancy closely!
We leave the venue delighted by this wonderful evening of music, which was full of new discoveries and favourites. A mix of genres that proves once again that small concert venues are brimming with hidden gems waiting to be discovered – and we’ll be telling you all about them for a long time to come! Just the sort of evening we love!
