Après avoir publié un album dédié aux reprises du groupe ABBA, le quintet finlandais Amberian Dawn amorce un retour aux sources avec Temptation’s Gates, prévu pour le 26 juin via Napalm Records. Ce nouvel opus marque une étape cruciale pour la formation avec l’intégration de Nicole Willerton au chant.

La chanteuse suédo-anglaise s’impose comme la troisième frontwoman à tenir le micro après Heidi et Capri, cette dernière ayant vécu pas moins de 14 ans avec le groupe avant de se consacrer à d’autres projets en début d’année. Pour insuffler ce nouveau souffle dans la musique du combo et s’aventurer sur des sentiers plus modernes, Nicole est épaulée par Emil Pohjalainen (guitare), Joonas Pykälä-aho (batterie), Jukka Hoffren (basse) et bien évidemment par le claviériste et guitariste Tuomas Seppälä.
Dès le morceau-titre d’ouverture, « Temptation’s Gates », l’auditeur fait face à un déferlement symphonique où les guitares et le clavier se livrent à un véritable duel. La voix cristalline de la nouvelle recrue fait sensation d’emblée et c’est l’occasion pour Emil de nous proposer le premier solo de guitare de l’album. Le rythme s’installe ensuite avec « The Vision Of Dreaming », une composition mélodique et redoutablement accrocheuse qui s’ancre immédiatement en tête.
C’est véritablement avec « Moon » que l’album dévoile de nouvelles facettes. Le registre se veut plus metal à l’aide d’une section rythmique s’emballant à coups de blast beats. Une nouvelle fois, le synthé et la guitare se livrent un superbe échange avant de s’achever sur un… scream ! Surprenant, il n’y a pas d’autres mots ! Et ce n’est pas tout, car la prise de risque continue avec « Unchained ». Sur ce titre soutenu par un riff groovy à la limite du burlesque, Nicole délaisse son registre habituel pour lâcher de puissants growls, une chose totalement inédite dans l’histoire d’Amberian Dawn ! Entre-temps, nous avons bien évidemment de nouveau droit à un solo de guitare venant sublimer ce titre central à l’album.
Que les fans se rassurent, le cœur du disque réconcilie les amateurs de power metal symphonique ! « Eternal Flame » et « Life Is Art » s’imposent comme de véritables hymnes épiques gorgés d’envolées lyriques. Dans une veine similaire, « This Night Is Waiting For Me » se révèle entraînant, ajoutant une touche dark métal à un son modernisé.
Exit les déferlements mélodiques, avec « Undying Colours », le groupe propose cette fois une parenthèse lente et atmosphérique. Les thématiques y sont plus intimes, abordant la persévérance et la résilience, comme en témoignent les paroles « This is my pain » et « Until I rise again ». Après un passage par le mélodique et traditionnel « The Garden », le quintet tire sa révérence sur « Phantasmagoria », morceau plus pop et irrésistiblement dansant. Tandis que cette dernière piste nous offre un ultime solo orchestré par Emil, « Phantasmagoria » ouvre la voie à un métal symphonique dépoussiéré sans dénaturer le genre.
Avec Temptation’s Gates, Amberian Dawn emprunte avec succès un nouveau chemin dans l’histoire de la formation, l’occasion pour eux d’explorer de nouvelles facettes de leur identité avec l’aide de Nicole Willerton. En mariant ses hymnes mélodiques à cette toute nouvelle orientation plus métal, la formation finlandaise prouve sa polyvalence musicale. Un nouveau chapitre commence !

Having released an album of ABBA covers, the Finnish quintet Amberian Dawn are returning to their roots with Temptation’s Gates, due out on June 26th via Napalm Records. This new album marks a crucial milestone for the band with the arrival of Nicole Willerton on vocals.
The Swedish-English singer is the third frontwoman to take the mic, following in the footsteps of Heidi and Capri, the latter having spent no fewer than 14 years with the band before moving on to other projects earlier this year. To breathe new life into the band’s music and venture down more modern paths, Nicole is supported by Emil Pohjalainen (guitar), Joonas Pykälä-aho (drums), Jukka Hoffren (bass) and, of course, keyboardist and guitarist Tuomas Seppälä.
Right from the opening title track, “Temptation’s Gates”, the listener is met with a symphonic onslaught in which the guitars and keyboards engage in a veritable duel. The new recruit’s crystal-clear voice makes an immediate impression, and this provides the perfect opportunity for Emil to treat us to the album’s first guitar solo. The rhythm then settles in with “The Vision Of Dreaming”, a melodic and incredibly catchy composition that immediately sticks in your head.
It is truly with “Moon” that the album reveals new facets. The sound takes on a more metal feel, driven by a rhythm section that races ahead with blast beats. Once again, the synth and guitar engage in a superb interplay before ending with a… scream! Surprising – there are no other words for it! And that’s not all, as the band continues to take risks with “Unchained”. On this track, underpinned by a groovy riff verging on the farcical, Nicole abandons her usual vocal style to unleash powerful growls, something completely unprecedented in Amberian Dawn’s history! Meanwhile, we’re of course treated once again to a guitar solo that elevates this central track on the album.
Fans can rest assured: the heart of the album will satisfy lovers of symphonic power metal! “Eternal Flame” and “Life Is Art” stand out as true epic anthems brimming with lyrical soaring passages. In a similar vein, “This Night Is Waiting For Me” proves to be a catchy track, adding a touch of dark metal to a modernised sound.
Gone are the melodic surges; with “Undying Colours”, the band offers a slow, atmospheric interlude this time round. The themes are more intimate, exploring perseverance and resilience, as evidenced by the lyrics “This is my pain” and “Until I rise again”. After a detour via the melodic and traditional “The Garden”, the quintet takes their leave with “Phantasmagoria”, a more pop-oriented and irresistibly danceable track. Whilst this final track treats us to one last solo orchestrated by Emil, “Phantasmagoria” paves the way for a fresh take on symphonic metal without compromising the genre.
With Temptation’s Gates, Amberian Dawn successfully charts a new course in the band’s history, giving them the opportunity to explore new facets of their identity with the help of Nicole Willerton. By blending their melodic anthems with this brand-new, more metal-oriented direction, the Finnish band demonstrates their musical versatility. A new chapter begins!
