Il y a trois ans nous vous parlions du surprenant Learning How To Live And Let Go, un petit ovni dans la discographie des écossais de The XCerts. Cet été le groupe, désormais basé à Brighton, nous fait découvrir son sixième album qui revient à des sonorités plus semblables à ce que les quatre premiers disques proposaient. Intitulé i think i want to go home now, il sera disponible le 10 juillet via FLG. Nous voilà partis pour onze nouveaux titres d’un groupe qui nous fait vibrer depuis de longues années.

Dès le morceau titre introductif on se retrouve plongé dans l’univers des écossais avec un son qu’on retrouve avec grand plaisir et qui nous rappelle déjà les plus belles heures de leurs albums précédents. La voix de Murray Macleod nous emporte sur « do it to myself » ou encore « wow ». Les émotions sont fortes, même si les titres sont relativement courts, et on comprend vite que des instants de vie très difficiles sont au coeur de ce disque. En effet entre la maladie du côté de la famille du chanteur et la perte d’un membre de la famille du côté du bassiste, chaque titre vient nous rappeler à quels points ces évènements ont marqué les deux musiciens. « sinking feeling » le représente parfaitement mais garde vraiment cette énergie communicative signature de la formation depuis toujours. Car oui, même sur des sujets tristes le groupe nous propose des morceaux entraînants qui nous font remuer dans notre salon. Là est la force cathartique de la musique de The Xcerts. Côté rythmique, on ressent aussi cette envie de faire de cette tristesse une force avec le jeu de basse énergique de Jordan Smith et la batterie de Tom Heron. Cette dichotomie se ressent encore plus sur le puissant « bury you » avant que « rinse repeat » ne vienne un peu calmer le jeu, en venant tout de même nous chercher dans l’émotion. L’album s’écoute avec bonheur et les refrains de titres comme « pretty ugly » ou « losing it » vous restent en tête dès la première écoute. Le rock des écossais a toujours cette envie gravée dans sa chair et ça fait un bien fou! Pour terminer ce disque, le groupe nous réserve une surprise avec « in your eyes ». Le morceau long de cinq minutes est clairement un des plus longs du groupe et viens tout en douceur clore ce disque, ou presque. Ici l’émotion est palpable et les frissons sont bien présents tout au long de ce morceau. Les trois musiciens excellent, avec des parties de guitare sublimes et une rythmique douce qui viennent exploser dans le final dans une débauche d’énergie brute. On sent, une fois de plus, l’envie de faire passer la douleur avec une musique dansante, comme un cri salvateur qui nous ferait lâcher cette boule au ventre qui nous habite.

Avec i think i want to go home now, The Xcerts nous livrent un album excellent qui regorge de titres qui rejoindront aisément les immanquables des concerts. On a face à nous un trio rock au sommet de son art, qui sait faire de la tristesse une véritable force. Onze titres qui vous restent en tête et qui regorgent de paroles à reprendre en chœur, soit une pure réussite!  On ne peut que vous conseiller de foncer sur ce disque dès sa sortie, et de notre côté on espère voir le groupe revenir en Europe très vite pour une tournée en tête d’affiche.

Three years ago, we told you about the surprising Learning How To Live And Let Go, something of an oddity in the discography of the Scottish band The XCerts. This summer, the band, now based in Brighton, is treating us to their sixth album, which returns to a sound more akin to that of their first four records. Entitled i think i want to go home now, it will be released on July 10th via FLG. Here we go then, eleven new tracks from a band that has been thrilling us for many years.

Right from the opening title track, we find ourselves immersed in the Scots’ world, with a sound that’s a real pleasure to hear and which already takes us back to the finest moments of their previous albums. Murray Macleod’s voice carries us away on “do it to myself” and “wow”. The emotions run high, even though the tracks are relatively short, and it quickly becomes clear that very difficult moments in life lie at the heart of this album. Indeed, between illness affecting the singer’s family and the loss of a family member on the bassist’s side, each track serves as a reminder of just how deeply these events have affected the two musicians. “sinking feeling” captures this perfectly whilst retaining that infectious energy that has always been the band’s hallmark. For even when tackling sad subjects, the band delivers catchy tracks that get us moving in our living rooms. Therein lies the cathartic power of The Xcerts’ music. On the rhythmic front, we also sense this desire to turn sadness into strength through Jordan Smith’s energetic bass playing and Tom Heron’s drumming. This dichotomy is even more evident on the powerful “bury you”, before “rinse repeat” comes along to calm things down a little, whilst still tugging at our heartstrings. The album is a joy to listen to, and the choruses of tracks like “pretty ugly” or “losing it” stick in your head from the very first listen. These Scottish rockers still have that drive ingrained in their very being, and it feels absolutely brilliant! To round off this album, the band has a surprise in store for us with “in your eyes”. This five-minute track is clearly one of the band’s longest and brings the album to a gentle close, or nearly so. Here, the emotion is palpable and you’ll get goosebumps throughout the whole track. The three musicians excel, with sublime guitar parts and a gentle rhythm section that explode in the finale in a riot of raw energy. Once again, you can sense the desire to channel pain through danceable music, like a liberating cry that helps us let go of that knot in our stomachs.

With i think i want to go home now, The Xcerts deliver an excellent album brimming with tracks that will easily become concert staples. Here we have a rock trio at the peak of their art, who know how to turn sadness into a real source of strength. Eleven tracks that stick in your head and are packed with lyrics to sing along to, a resounding success! We can only advise you to snap up this album as soon as it’s released, and for our part, we hope to see the band return to Europe very soon for a headlining tour.
