Six ans après Premonitions, Sojourner nous reviennent avec un tout nouveau disque après plusieurs changement de lineup! Intitulé Gateways, il sera disponible le 10 juillet prochain via Avantgarde Music. Sur ce disque on retrouve pour la première fois Heike Langhan (ex-Draconian, Remina) au chant en compagnie de Emilio Crespo. Sept titres où les atmosphères fortes que la formation sait créer s’annoncent comme toujours plus envoutantes.

Dès « Dawnrays » nous voilà plongés dans un univers où les parties folk rejoignent un métal toujours plus puissant émotionnellement et atmosphérique. Comme toujours le groupe prend le temps, et les riffs de Mike Lamb, également compositeur principal du projet, viennent nous émerveiller par leur beauté. Le mélange des voix de Emilio et Heike est sublime, et cette dernière fait une entrée fracassante dans le monde de Sojourner. On retrouve sa voix qui nous avait tant marqué dans les albums Sovran et Under A Godless Veil de Draconian. Les screams de Emilio sont à tomber sur « And The Paintings Fall » et la douceur du chant de Heike, qui nous fait toujours autant penser au timbre de Sharon Den Adel de Within Temptation à plusieurs instants, sur « Lunar Tear » vient nous coller des frissons. Côté rythmiques, on est servi par les alternances entre douceur et puissance brute de Mike Wilson à la basse et Riccardo Floridia à la batterie. Les deux musiciens excellent et viennent apporter à chaque titre une identité très forte renforcée par les riffs dantesques de Mike Lamb. « Occultation » nous émerveille une fois de plus, puis « Epitaphs » vient resonner avec grand bonheur dans nos oreilles. En effet, ce titre sorti en 2024 uniquement en ligne avait marqué les fans à raison comme porte d’entrée vers la nouvelle ère du groupe. Chaque titre est une véritable aventure musicale et ça n’est pas « Vvardenfell » qui nous fera changer d’avis. Tout y est taillé pour nous faire passer par des émotions fortes tout en proposant un métal absolument magistral emprunts d’éléments folkloriques disséminés ça et là avec brio. Enfin « The Road Ahead » vient clore notre aventure de la plus belle des manières, avec des performances stratosphériques de chaque personne présente sur ce disque et une histoire toujours aussi bien contée en musique. On a attendu ce disque mais clairement cela en valait la peine tant chaque titre fait nous ouvre une porte vers une épopée totale qu’on veut revivre encore et encore.
Sojourner présentent ce Gateways comme un album conçu avec passion au fil des dernières années et clairement on ne peut que confirmer leur dires. Ce disque regorge d’idées de composition et vient nous remémorer à quel point Sojourner savent nous faire voyager en musique. On ne peut que vous conseiller l’écoute de ce disque, et on espère que ça n’est que le début d’une nouvelle ère pour le groupe et qu’on aura la chance de pouvoir découvrir ces nouveaux titres très bientôt en concert. Une des très belles sorties de l’été!

Six years after Premonitions, Sojourner are back with a brand-new album following several line-up changes! Entitled Gateways, it will be released on July 10th via Avantgarde Music. This album features Heike Langhan (ex-Draconian, Remina) on vocals for the first time, alongside Emilio Crespo. Seven tracks in which the powerful atmospheres the band is so adept at creating promise to be, as ever, even more spellbinding.
Right from “Dawnrays”, we’re plunged into a world where folk elements blend with metal that’s ever more emotionally powerful and atmospheric. As always, the band takes its time, and the riffs by Mike Lamb, who is also the project’s main composer – never fail to amaze us with their beauty. The blend of Emilio and Heike’s voices is sublime, and Heike makes a sensational debut in the world of Sojourner. We recognise the voice that made such an impression on us in Draconian’s albums Sovran and Under A Godless Veil. Emilio’s screams on “And The Paintings Fall” are to die for, whilst the gentleness of Heike’s vocals, which, at various moments, still remind us so much of Sharon Den Adel’s tone in Within Temptation, on “Lunar Tear” sends shivers down our spines. On the rhythmic front, we’re treated to the interplay between the smoothness and raw power of Mike Wilson on bass and Riccardo Floridia on drums. Both musicians excel, lending each track a very strong identity, reinforced by Mike Lamb’s epic riffs. “Occultation” leaves us in awe once again, followed by “Epitaphs”, which resonates delightfully in our ears. Indeed, this track, released in 2024 exclusively online, rightly left a lasting impression on fans as the gateway to the band’s new era. Every track is a true musical adventure, and “Vvardenfell” certainly won’t make us change our minds. Everything about it is designed to take us on an emotional rollercoaster, whilst delivering absolutely masterful metal, interspersed here and there with folk elements to brilliant effect. Finally, “The Road Ahead” brings our adventure to a close in the finest possible way, with stratospheric performances from everyone featured on this album and a story told through music that’s as compelling as ever. We’ve been waiting for this album, but it was clearly worth the wait, as each track opens a door to a truly epic journey that we want to relive time and time again.
Sojourner present Gateways as an album crafted with passion over the last few years, and we can certainly confirm that this is indeed the case. This record is brimming with compositional ideas and serves as a reminder of just how skilfully Sojourner can take us on a musical journey. We can’t recommend listening to this album highly enough, and we hope this is just the start of a new era for the band and that we’ll have the chance to experience these new tracks live very soon. One of the summer’s finest releases!
