Le groupe de post rock du sud du Michigan Man Mountain revient après six ans sans nouveau disque avec son deuxième album studio. Intitulé Threads Of Another Life, il est disponible depuis le 24 juillet via Spartan Records. Sept titres instrumentaux nous amenant à réfléchir à cette phrase de Frodon Sacquet dans Le Seingeur Des Anneaux : « Comment ramasser les fils d’une vie ancienne ? ». Point central de cet album, cette phrase vient nous hanter dans chaque titre du disque des américains.

Plutôt que de vous parler de chaque titre indépendamment, ici nous allons vous raconter le voyage sonore proposé par les quatre musiciens. Les riffs de Bryan Cowles et Mike Reaume viennent vous habiter tout au long du disque en alternant entre une mélancolie douce, des envolées sublimes et un sentiment de vouloir aller de l’avant et prendre ces épreuves de la vie comme un moyen de faire évoluer la personne que l’on est. Les deux guitaristes excellent et nous font passer par un torrent d’émotions plus fortes les unes que les autres. Côté rythmique on retrouve David Aaron Reaume à la basse et Jacob Goins à la batterie, également en très grande forme. Sur ce disque les rythmiques changeantes aident aux voyage proposé par les riffs. On se laisse porter par la douceur d’un titre comme la douceur globale d’un « Astralis » pendant que « Bright Oblivion » monte en puissance pour vous faire vibrer toujours plus fort plus la puissance rythmique arrive. Le quatuor a pris le temps et ça se sent! Un titre comme « Absence / Descent », véritable pierre angulaire du disque, à notre avis, vient vous coller des frissons instantanément et vous reste dans la tête, tant il regorge de belles idées de composition et de notes taillées pour nous transporter loin et vous faire réfléchir en douceur sur le deuil et son impact sur nos vies. Le thème de l’album est aussi au coeur du titre « Halcyon Dream », et va même plus loin en nous invitant à utiliser la nostalgie de moments qui nous tiennent à coeur comme un moyen d’aller de l’avant. Encore une fois les quatre américains nous offrent ce que le post rock fait de meilleur, en laissant nos sentiments et émotions s’exprimer toujours plus fort. Le disque se clôt sur le sublime « Impermanence » qui nous laisse avec l’envie de replonger en boucle dans ce disque et d’y trouver à chaque écoute de nouvelles sensations fortes.
L’attente entre les deux disques de Man Mountain n’a pas été vaine. Avec Threads Of Another Life, le groupe nous offre un disque synonyme d’émerveillement auditif. Chaque titre est une aventure émotionnelle forte, et on se laisse porter sans effort dans ce disque nous laissant réfléchir au sens de la phrase citée en introduction de l’article. Un moment d’écoute suspendu qui nous a laissé avec ses fameux frissons tout du long! The South Michigan post-rock band Man Mountain are back with their second studio album after a six-year hiatus. Entitled Threads Of Another Life, it has been available since July 24th via Spartan Records. Seven instrumental tracks that prompt us to reflect on this line from Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings: “How do you pick up the threads of an old life? ”. At the heart of this album, this line haunts us throughout every track on the American band’s record.
Rather than discussing each track individually, here we’re going to take you on the musical journey crafted by these four musicians. The riffs of Bryan Cowles and Mike Reaume stay with you throughout the album, alternating between gentle melancholy, sublime soaring passages and a sense of wanting to move forward and embrace life’s trials as a means of personal growth. The two guitarists excel, taking us through a torrent of emotions, each more intense than the last. On the rhythm side, we find David Aaron Reaume on bass and Jacob Goins on drums, both in superb form. On this album, the shifting rhythms enhance the journey created by the riffs. You’re carried away by the gentleness of a track like ‘Astralis’, whilst ‘Bright Oblivion’ builds in intensity, making you feel the vibrations grow ever stronger as the rhythmic power kicks in. The quartet have taken their time, and it shows! A track like “Absence / Descent”—in our view, the true cornerstone of the album—gives you instant goosebumps and sticks in your head, so rich is it with beautiful compositional ideas and notes crafted to transport us far away and gently make us reflect on grief and its impact on our lives. The album’s theme is also at the heart of the track “Halcyon Dream”, and takes it a step further by inviting us to use our nostalgia for moments close to our hearts as a means of moving forward. Once again, the four Americans offer us the very best that post-rock has to offer, allowing our feelings and emotions to express themselves ever more powerfully. The album closes with the sublime “Impermanence”, which leaves us wanting to dive back into this record on repeat and discover new thrills with every listen.
The wait between Man Mountain’s two albums has not been in vain. With *Threads Of Another Life*, the band treats us to an album that is nothing short of an auditory marvel. Each track is a powerful emotional journey, and we find ourselves effortlessly swept away by this album, left pondering the meaning of the quote cited at the start of this article. A spellbinding listening experience that left us with those famous goosebumps from start to finish!
