Cela fait un moment que nous n’avons pas eu de nouvelles du trio de rock anglais Crawlers, même si leur premier album, sorti en 2024, continue de nous hanter lorsque nous le réécoutons de temps à autre. Mais cette année, ils sont de retour avec un court EP intitulé Turn Off The TV, prêt à faire vibrer notre été. Il est sorti le 14 août chez Nettwerk.

Le projet fait parler de lui depuis début juin avec le premier titre, « Afraid To Die ». S’ouvrant sur un riff de guitare percutant qui donne le ton de l’album, ce morceau est empreint de vulnérabilité et d’authenticité, avec des paroles qui nous prennent aux tripes pour nous emmener vers des contrées plus sombres : « I wanna be afraid to die ». La batterie mène le morceau, lui donnant son rythme tout en ajoutant une touche dramatique supplémentaire. La chanson nous plonge dans un combat contre la dépression qui semble être remporté avec la phrase : « I’ve changed my mind, I’m afraid to die ». Vient ensuite « Stay Alive », inédit jusqu’à la sortie de l’EP. Le morceau s’ouvre sur un riff de guitare empreint d’un sentiment d’urgence et aborde, dans ses paroles, l’absurdité et l’angoisse engendrées par l’état actuel du monde, ce qui n’est pas vraiment rassurant. Le tempo est plus rapide, tandis que la mélodie apporte une touche plus optimiste, donnant de l’élan au morceau, ce qui est très appréciable. « COOL » se démarque, s’ouvrant sur une ligne de basse groovy qui nous propulse dans une énergie d’un autre genre. C’est quelque peu différent de ce à quoi Crawlers nous a habitués, mais ça fonctionne VRAIMENT bien. Le morceau parle de la tentative de devenir la personne que tout le monde attend de vous, alors que la vie en dehors de ce cadre continue de suivre son cours. Tout correspond à cette attitude, du rythme à la mélodie, en passant par la rage et le volume. L’intensité ne cesse de monter, menant presque à une explosion, et on s’imagine déjà en train de chanter à tue-tête et d’être là pour vivre ce morceau en live. Enfin, « All We Have Is US » clôt l’EP, nous laissant en quête d’un véritable lien humain. Une ligne de basse entraînante porte le morceau tandis que le chant est plus doux, créant ainsi un contraste avec la chanson précédente. « If all we have is us? If it’s only this feeling, why do you push away my love? Why do I think of leaving? » Ce n’est pas un message de paix, mais plutôt une réflexion sur les difficultés que l’on rencontre dans les relations d’aujourd’hui. C’est brut, honnête, et les refrains fonctionnent à merveille pour nous captiver. Une excellente conclusion pour cet EP, qui nous laisse néanmoins en redemander.
Turn Off The TV donne l’impression d’une nouvelle présentation du groupe, le début d’une nouvelle ère. Si vous étiez déjà là, alors bienvenue à nouveau. Si vous êtes nouveau, il est temps de plonger avec nous dans l’univers des Crawlers.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything new from the English rock trio Crawlers, although their debut album, released in 2024, still haunts us with the occasional repeat play. But this year, they are back with a short EP titled Turn Off The TV ready to rock our summer. It was released on August 14th via Nettwerk.

The project has been teased since the beginning of June with the first track, “Afraid To Die”. Opening with a punchy guitar riff that sets the tone for the project, the track is full of vulnerability and authenticity, with lyrics that take us by the guts to somewhere darker: “I wanna be afraid to die”. The drums lead the track, giving it rhythm while adding an extra layer of drama. The song takes us into a battle against depression that seems to be won with the line, “I’ve changed my mind, I’m afraid to die”. “Stay Alive” follows, unheard until the EP’s release. It opens with a sense of urgency in the guitar riff and looks at the absurdity and anxiety brought on by the current state of the world in the lyrics, which isn’t exactly reassuring. The tempo is faster, while the melody brings something more hopeful, lifting the track up which is quite appreciated. “COOL” stands out, opening with a groovy bass line that propels us into a different kind of energy. It’s somewhat different from what we are used to hearing from Crawlers, but it works SO well. The track is about trying to become the person everyone expects you to be while life outside them is still happening. Everything matches its attitude, from the rhythm and melody to the rage and volume. It keeps building, almost leading to an explosion, and we can already imagine ourselves screaming along and being there to experience this track live. Finally, “All We Have Is US” closes the EP, leaving us yearning for real human connection. A bouncy bass line carries the track while the vocals are softer, creating a contrast with the previous song. “If all we have is us? If it’s only this feeling, why do you push away my love? Why do I think of leaving?” It’s not a message of peace, but rather about the difficulties we encounter in today’s relationships. It’s raw, honest, and the hooks work perfectly to pull us in. A great closure for this EP but still leaving us yearning for more.
Turn Off The TV feels like a reintroduction to the band, the beginning of a new era. If you were already here, then welcome back. If you’re new, it’s time to plunge into the world of Crawlers with us.
