With these 11 tracks, the Canadians show us once again why they’ve been the best for 25 years. Chosen Hell is insanely heavy. The drums are immense, the guitars massive and surgical. The breakdowns are more crushing than ever, as on “Underneath The Pressure” with its sheer urgency to crush everything in its path, or “Target On My Back” with its overpowering bassline. The track “Too Late” is no slouch either and is as heavy as a tank. The riffs are devastatingly effective, once again alternating between ‘chunky’ verses and open choruses, alongside heart-wrenching screams. The break, too, is of immeasurable power. (It’s going to get absolutely wild at live gigs – remember to take some arnica).

‘Vindication’ and the title track, ‘Chosen Hell’, are as groovy as can be and clearly make you want to dance and go wild as if the world were about to end (oh, wait…). With ‘Heartland Elegy’, we’re right in the thick of the 2000s punk rock revival, and it’s sure to be a sing-along hit at live gigs.

The contrasts in the vocals are striking. Indeed, on this new album, Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox lends her voice to “Shedding Season”. Andrew’s visceral rage, combined with Courtney’s hypnotic power, which thickens the song’s atmosphere, creates an explosive and intense mix. Let’s not forget the epic collaboration with Brendan Garrone of Incendiary on “Yesterday’s Gone” either. Here, hardcore punk meets hard-hitting New York hardcore. The dynamic between Andrew’s rough vocals and Brendan’s more nasal, dry delivery is wild. This “clash” of two instantly recognisable voices makes for a killer track.

As well as being incredibly powerful musically, the album tackles dark themes which are, once again, painfully relevant today. It deals with self-destruction, paranoia, the struggle to remain true to oneself and one’s principles in a society that forces upon us the exact opposite of who we are, and the mourning of the past. There’s a certain vulnerability and incredible resilience that radiates from the whole record, which makes it all the more powerful.

Chosen Hell is a perfect blend of the raw urgency of hardcore punk and the heaviness of more modern metal. Comeback Kid are still capable of reinventing themselves without losing any of their brilliance, and are becoming even greater. Yet another thoroughly cathartic album – and one we sorely need.
