For the final team on the road on October 30th, Cerbère Coryphée treated us to another event organised with their usual flair. This one took place at The Black Lab, with a stoner rock theme. The line-up featured three international bands, with the American band Valley of the Sun as the support act and My Sleeping Karma headlining. The German band The Obsessed therefore slotted right in the middle of this impressive line-up!

The venue is packed when Valley of the Sun take to the stage. The band is a classic trio comprising bass, guitar and drums. And with these simple elements, the musicians work wonders! The energy is palpable from the outset. Valley of the Sun deliver some great American rock, with the old-school touches we love, just over a year after their last gig in Lille! The band doesn’t hold back, the riffs are massive, the bass is heavy… In spirit, there’s a Clutch or Red Fang vibe to it. Valley of the Sun are the support act, and the standard is already extremely high! The sound is perfect and does full justice to the band’s compositions. Ryan Ferrier’s (guitar) vocals never falter, and are occasionally joined by those of Chris Sweeney (bass). Behind his kit, Johnny Kathman weaves a variety of rhythms. You’re never bored! Their blues-tinged stoner rock is devilishly effective. The set ends far too quickly for our liking. Valley of the Sun then wrap up with “Low Not Slow”, an instrumental track from their recently released album The Blacklight Sessions, which starts slowly before stretching out over several minutes, building in intensity all the way through. We’re completely won over!
Next up is a completely different style. The Obsessed, who’ve been around since 1978, bring a touch of nostalgia. Their motto, ‘Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Free’, is proudly displayed on the backdrop. It’s a cross between doom and old-school punk. For fans of the old school, there’s plenty to go round! The musicians reel off track after track, which quickly start to feel repetitive. The rhythm section is generally always the same, no frills, in a binary rhythm. There’s that slightly raw punk edge, much loved by fans, combined with the heavy sound of doom. We have to admit that at first we’re enjoying this original band that’s stood the test of time. But before long, we find ourselves drifting away from the set, like many others in the venue. We’re not entirely won over by their sound, but we’re still delighted to see such a great variety of bands on stage!
It’s just before 9 pm and here comes the highlight of the show. My Sleeping Karma take to the stage. A short introduction gets us in the mood. The band share a group hug before kicking off. A giant screen displays visuals, initially in plasticine style, but which evolve throughout the set. We’re quickly drawn into their world. There’s a very dreamy quality to it, at times reminiscent of DIIV. The highly melodic, ethereal keyboard is accompanied by a heavier rhythm section. The balance between the psychedelic and emotional elements is perfect. There are clearly post-rock influences in the band’s rich compositions. Whether it’s post-stoner or post-psychedelic, it’s hard to say exactly what to call it, but it’s clear that the band has created something new and entirely their own. They sit somewhere between Glowsun and Monkey3, two bands we’ve seen in this very same venue. We’re transported into a parallel world when images of the musicians are projected onto the back wall, showing them playing, but at a different gig. This obviously evokes a psychedelic feel, but also a sort of dystopia reminiscent of holograms and technology increasingly taking precedence over humanity. The musicians, however, are right there in front of us. Karma may be dormant, but neither the musicians nor the audience are. The audience is calm, as if completely spellbound by the tracks. It’s more than just experiencing the live performance; it feels as though we’re completely immersed in it. The whole experience transports us far away, and personally, I let myself be carried away by my emotions, just as they come. Eyes close, bodies sway… We let ourselves be completely carried away by the tracks. They’re long and build in intensity gradually, reaching utterly wild peaks. The set takes us on a journey before gently bringing us back to the here and now at the end of the gig. My Sleeping Karma completely blew us away and won over the whole venue with their sound.
This evening of diverse stoner rock lived up to all expectations and more. The line-up featured three bands with distinct styles, each taking us on a journey through different atmospheres. In the end, there was something for everyone, and we were all brought together by a brilliant performance: what more could we ask for?
