#Album : Valley Of The Sun – The Blacklight Sessions (02/10/2026)

Right from the intro to “The Whiskey Elf”, we find everything that makes Valley Of The Sun’s music so addictive. The track is bursting with energy and shows us just how much the new trio line-up has lost none of its punch. Indeed, Johnny Kathman on drums leaves us no chance with a performance brimming with passion and energy, making this first, rather short track the perfect opener for this new album. The next track lives up to all its promises, with five minutes of full-throttle riffs and basslines, whilst the heaviness of the sound hits us with such force it feels as though it might dislocate our jaws. Ryan Ferrier also delivers some devilishly effective vocals that round off a track clearly tailor-made for the stage; it flies by so quickly, brimming as it is with beautiful psychedelic influences delivered with the delicacy of a 33-tonne lorry. The tracks continue to set the tone with “The Long Song” and its ten minutes that alternate between obvious blues influences and bursts of stoner and psychedelic rock, confirming the band’s love for ever more frenzied jams. It’s impossible to remain unmoved by such musical mastery. Quite simply, you savour every note as if it were a tangy sweet. On bass, Chris Sweeney also works wonders on the very short but no less furiously energising “A Greater Meaning”. Next comes “Mountain”, where the trio have decided to take all the influences mentioned earlier to the extreme, presenting us with a track that sounds like the centrepiece of this album. Quite simply, every second is a delight for the ears and leaves us in awe of the Americans’ talent. If this track is the mountain we must climb to reach musical nirvana, then we’d better get our ice axes ready straight away! Finally, “No Hope” leaves the listener with another wonderful dose of jamming and soaring passages, each one more thrilling to hear than the last. Once again, the band delivers eight minutes of top-class music, offering us the very best the genre has to offer. Here, each of the trio’s three members gives their all to leave us with the feeling that we’ve listened to an album that will leave its mark for months and years to come, and we can tell you it’s a resounding success!

With The Blacklight Sessions, Valley Of The Sun prove that the power trio formula suits them down to the ground. It’s hard not to use even more superlatives, given just how speechless this record has left us. A gem of the genre that only serves to deepen our love for this band, which, both on album and live, brings all the madness of psychedelic stoner rock with a softer, more moving touch that emerges to our great delight.
