Le 30 juillet dernier, The Black Lab fêtait ses 5 ans en grande pompe. Comme l’année dernière, la salle proposait une soirée Duvel, mais cette fois avec une programmation sous le signe du stoner. C’était ainsi l’occasion de retrouver les locaux de Myar, de fêter en nombre le retour de Glowsun et d’assister à la prestation des américains de Dead Meadow.

On démarre donc cette soirée avec les locaux de Myar. Le son de The Black Lab rend parfaitement hommages à leurs riches compositions. Leurs sonorités old school viennent compléter leur stoner percutant. La formation a sorti son premier album, Bleak Mountains, en avril dernier et vient à nouveau nous convaincre de la qualité de ses titres. On entend pléthores d’influences, entremêlées et équilibrées, formant un son et un univers unique. On peut ainsi se balader dans le garage stoner, avec des rythmiques par moments doomesques, sans oublier les petites touches bluesy, tout en étant emmenés par les riffs psychédéliques. Myar réussi parfaitement à conjuguer l’aspect planant du psyché avec le côté lourd du stoner. Par moments, le tempo s’accélère, avant de revenir sur des passages beaucoup plus calmes. Le groupe joue également avec les nuances et la puissance du son. Avec ces contrastes saisissant, on ne peut jamais s’ennuyer face à leur set de grande qualité. La section rythmique, emmenée par Nina Hirsch à la basse et Julien Scymaniak à la batterie fait des merveilles, tandis que les riffs de Victorien Guy et Paul-Antoine Vinchent nous happent totalement. Les effets dans les guitares, toujours utilisés à bon escient, permettent de varier les propositions tout au long du set. Les instruments sont ici l’aspect principal des compositions, et la voix vient se poser pour apporter toujours plus à l’ambiance instaurée par le groupe. On est encore une fois convaincu par cette prestation de haute volée, et « Mother », dernier titre du set, arrive bien vite ! Myar clôt ainsi son concert par le dernier titre de son album, que l’on conseille à chacun !
Après avoir été cherché un peu d’air dehors, nous revenons dans la salle bien chauffée pour retrouver les Marchiennois de Glowsun. Il s’agit ce soir de leur grand retour lillois après plusieurs année d’absence. Si vous lisez régulièrement nos lignes, vous me direz qu’ils sont déjà passés en février à la Griffe, mais cela était une première partie surprise et était davantage un concert confidentiel qu’un retour en grande pompe à The Black Lab. Nous avions également pu profiter de leur set lors du BetizFest à Cambrai en avril dernier. Un public nombreux s’est déplacé pour eux ce soir. Le groupe nous accueille avec une longe introduction, bien planante, pouvant évoquer un lever de soleil, laissant contemplatif. Puis le son vient prendre toute son ampleur. La basse se fait alors lourde et les riffs plus haut perchés. Le trio est habité par ses titres, comme possédé. On est totalement happé par la prestation, et on est vraiment heureux du retour de cette formation qui propose des compositions particulièrement qualitative. L’ensemble est principalement instrumental, avec de temps à autre une voix grave et puissante qui vient résonner. Le tempo est souvent lent, mais peut par moment accélérer et nous embarquer. On a la sensation que l’on entre en résonance avec les titres, et que notre propre rythme se confond avec celui des compositions. Glowsun a un don pour instaurer une véritable ambiance. Les transitions sont particulièrement travaillées, le son ne s’arrêtant jamais, au point qu’on a l’impression d’un seul et unique titre qui se déroule durant tout le set. Glowsun nous embarque dans un voyage psychédélique que l’on est ravi de faire avec eux. Le ressenti peut se faire parfois plus sombre, mais nous amenant tout de même dans un univers onirique. La formation déroule là un stoner de haute volée, parfaitement maitrisé et parfaitement exécuté. Le concert prend fin sous un tonnerre d’acclamations et d’applaudissements largement mérités !
C’est un nouveau trio qui conclut cette soirée d’anniversaire, mais venant cette fois des Etats-Unis : Dead Meadow. Nous découvrons ce soir la formation en live, qui est pourtant iconique dans le style et a presque 30 ans à son actif. D’entrée de jeu, on entend une voix assez cristalline qui nous évoque Mars Red Sky. Niveau ambiance, la continuité avec Glowsun est très chouette. On reste dans cet état de fusion avec la musique. L’aspect psychédélique est bien présent également, avec des passages particulièrement ambiants. Par moment, la guitare amène des mélodies qui forment comme un chant. Dead Meadow nous propose de nouveaux titres, issus de leur album paru le lendemain du concert : Foundlings. On peut ainsi ce soir profiter d’une large palette de leurs titres à travers les époques. Les sonorités sont moins lourdes que ce que l’on a pu entendre tout au long de la soirée. Il est clair que Dead Meadow est une influence majeure pour nombre de groupe stoner psyché actuels. Au fur et à mesure du set, la voix retombe parfois un peu plus dans les médiums et nous donne à entendre un autre aspect de la formation. On doit tout de même admettre que l’on sentait beaucoup plus d’émulation dans la salle durant le set de Glowsun. Dead Meadow produit un très bon stoner classique mais a du mal à transcender une partie de la foule actuelle. Évidemment, beaucoup de fans sont présents et apprécient le set. Le concert est efficace, propre, net, dans un style qui provoque un bel engouement du public lillois. Au final, tout ce qu’on demande pour finir une belle soirée d’anniversaire !
La soirée a tenu toutes ses promesses : stoner, psyché, Duvel (même si on note une rupture de stock assez tôt). Le public était au rendez-vous. Myar a prouvé que ses titres sont aussi efficaces en album qu’ne live, nous avons pu voir les légendaires Dead Meadow, et Glowsun a volé la vedette à la tête d’affiche tant leur proposition est originale et efficace ! Tout ce qu’il nous reste à dire c’est : bon anniversaire à The Black Lab, et longue vie à cette salle !

On July 30th, The Black Lab celebrated its fifth anniversary in style. As was the case last year, the venue hosted a Duvel night, but this time with a line-up dedicated to stoner rock. It was a chance to catch the local band Myar, celebrate Glowsun’s return in style, and see the American band Dead Meadow perform.

So we kick off the evening with local band Myar. The sound at The Black Lab pays perfect homage to their rich compositions. Their old-school tones complement their hard-hitting stoner sound. The band released their debut album, Bleak Mountains, last April and are once again proving the quality of their tracks. There’s a wealth of influences, interwoven and balanced, creating a unique sound and atmosphere. We’re taken on a journey through garage stoner, with rhythms that are at times doom-like, not to mention subtle bluesy touches, all whilst being carried along by psychedelic riffs. Myar perfectly manage to blend the trippy aspect of psychedelia with the heaviness of stoner rock. At times, the tempo picks up, before returning to much calmer passages. The band also plays with the nuances and power of their sound. With these striking contrasts, you’re never bored during their high-quality set. The rhythm section, led by Nina Hirsch on bass and Julien Scymaniak on drums, works wonders, whilst the riffs from Victorien Guy and Paul-Antoine Vinchent completely draw you in. The guitar effects, always used to great effect, add variety throughout the set. The instruments are the main focus of the compositions here, and the vocals come in to further enhance the atmosphere created by the band. Once again, we’re thoroughly impressed by this top-class performance, and “Mother”, the final track of the set, comes round all too soon! Myar brings the concert to a close with the closing track from his album, which we highly recommend to everyone!
After stepping outside for a breath of fresh air, we head back into the cosy, warm venue to catch Glowsun, the band from Marchiennois. Tonight marks their grand return to Lille after several years away. If you’re a regular reader of our column, you’ll point out that they already played at La Griffe back in February, but that was a surprise support slot and felt more like an intimate gig than a grand comeback at The Black Lab. We’d also had the chance to enjoy their set at BetizFest in Cambrai last April. A large crowd has turned out for them tonight. The band welcomes us with a long, dreamy introduction, reminiscent of a sunrise, leaving us in a contemplative mood. Then the sound really comes into its own. The bass becomes heavy and the riffs take on a higher pitch. The trio is completely absorbed in their songs, as if possessed. We were completely swept up by the performance, and we were truly delighted by the return of this band, whose compositions are of such high quality. The set is mainly instrumental, with a deep, powerful voice resonating from time to time. The tempo is often slow, but can at times pick up and carry us along. We felt as though we were resonating with the tracks, and that our own rhythm was merging with that of the compositions. Glowsun has a knack for creating a real atmosphere. The transitions are particularly well-crafted, with the sound never stopping, to the point where it feels like a single, continuous track unfolding throughout the set. Glowsun take us on a psychedelic journey that we’re delighted to embark on with them. The mood may sometimes take a darker turn, but it still transports us into a dreamlike world. The band deliver top-class stoner rock here, perfectly mastered and flawlessly executed. The gig ends to a thunderous roar of cheers and well-deserved applause!
A new trio brings this anniversary evening to a close, though this time hailing from the United States: Dead Meadow. Tonight we’re discovering the band live, despite them being iconic within the genre and having nearly 30 years under their belt. Right from the start, we hear a rather crystalline voice that brings Mars Red Sky to mind. In terms of atmosphere, the continuity with Glowsun is really great. We remain in this state of oneness with the music. The psychedelic element is very much present too, with some particularly atmospheric passages. At times, the guitar weaves melodies that almost sound like vocals. Dead Meadow treat us to new tracks from their album, Foundlings, which was released the day after the concert. So tonight we get to enjoy a wide range of their songs spanning the years. The sound is less heavy than what we’ve heard throughout the evening. It’s clear that Dead Meadow is a major influence on many current psychedelic stoner bands. As the set progresses, the vocals sometimes dip a little further into the mid-range, revealing another side to the band. We have to admit, though, that there was a much greater sense of excitement in the venue during Glowsun’s set. Dead Meadow produce excellent classic stoner rock but struggle to really captivate part of the current crowd. Naturally, there were plenty of fans in attendance, and they thoroughly enjoyed the set. The gig was tight, polished and crisp, in a style that really got the Lille crowd going. All in all, just what you’d want to round off a brilliant birthday evening!
The evening lived up to all expectations: stoner, psychedelic, Duvel (although we did notice they ran out of stock quite early on). The crowd turned out in force. Myar proved that their tracks are just as effective live as they are on album; we got to see the legendary Dead Meadow; and Glowsun stole the show from the headliners, such was the originality and impact of their performance! All that’s left for us to say is: happy birthday to The Black Lab, and long may this venue thrive!
