Huit ans après leur dernier album à quatre, et quatre ans après l’album I WENT TO HELL AND BACK, les anglais de As It Is nous reviennent avec leur line up d’origine pour un tout nouveau disque. Après des années difficiles de thérapie, de réflexions sur leurs envies de faire de la musique ensemble, les voilà enfin de retour! Sobrement intitulé As It Is, ce nouvel album du quatuor de Brighton sera disponible le 17 juillet prochain via FLG. Douze nouveaux titres qui viennent nous conter cette aventure humaine, et nous laisser entrevoir le début d’une nouvelle ère pour la formation.

La rythmique dansante de « I’m So Alive » nous lance de ce disque avec le bonheur de retrouver la voix de Patty Walters, toujours aussi entraînante et pleine d’émotion. On sent dès ce premier titre l’envie de renouveau tout en retrouvant un son qui peut faire penser à l’album okay. sorti en 2017, avec en surprise un solo de saxophone et une chorale en fin de titre. Le duo de guitare qu’il forme avec Benjamin Langford-Biss est en grande forme et c’est un pur bonheur de les réentendre jouer et chanter ensemble, puisque Ben s’occupe également des cœurs. Sur le titre suivant le groupe accueille un autre habitant de Brighton en la personne de Murray Macleod de The XCerts, qui viennent d’ailleurs de sortir un album sur le même label. Les deux univers se rejoignent parfaitement et vu les histoires personnelles des deux groupes, on ne peut que comprendre pourquoi cette chanson existe. Les paroles sont très personnelles et l’émotion passe sans effort. Côté rythmique Alistair Testo à la basse et Patrick Foley à la batterie font des merveilles sur des titres comme « Do You Remember?  » ou encore le très fun et surprenant « Live, Laugh, Love, Los Angeles » qui réaccueille le saxophone, qui vient apporter de nouvelles sonorités à la musique du quatuor anglais, et c’est très réussi! L’émotion revient en force avec « Marilyn », disponible depuis déjà quelques temps et mettant en avant la guitare de Patty. Là encore le côté personnel des paroles vient toucher au coeur et nous faire vivre un peu plus fort, pour ne pas sombrer.

« Watching The World Go Bye » nous renvoie à la dureté du monde actuel pendant que « Lose Your Way & Find Yourself » nous rappelle à quel point faire son chemin pour aller mieux est important et à quel point nos amis peuvent nous y aider. Ce titre puissant a mis quasiment un an a être crée et a signé le retour du groupe en amont de ce disque. Encore une fois la force du quatuor se retrouve dans cette envie de garder l’envie de proposer des titres à chanter en coeur dans la fosse, tout en s’éloignant des sonorités pop punk des premiers disques pour un son bien plus pop rock qui leur va à merveille. As It Is nous régalent avec « Last At The Party » avec le côté jazzy de la fin de morceau qui donne à voir, une fois de plus les envies nouvelles du groupe. « Turn To Dust » part dans une vibe électro acoustique avec Ben qui prend une part encore plus importante du chant sur les couplets avec brio. Les chœurs sont aussi là en force et autant dire, qu’on aura aucun mal à reprendre ce titre lors des futurs concerts de la formation. Le riff en milieu de titre nous renvoie à U2 à notre grande surprise, mais là encore cela nous colle des frissons. Le côté pop du son se ressent fort sur « If I Ever Lost You », avec toujours cette émotion brute qui se ressent dans les voix et le jeu de guitare de Patty et Ben, et dans la performance de Foley et Ali. On arrive doucement à la fin, mais avant Patty vient nous chercher dans une belle émotion acoustique avec le sublime « Not Anymore », une fois encore très très personnel. Enfin une touche d’espoir vient clore ce disque avec « What If It All Works Out », morceau entraînant qui nous laisse avec un sourire ému au coin des lèvres et qui laisse les musiciens s’exprimer au plus fort de leurs expérience une dernière fois.

Cet album éponyme de As It Is est une belle réussite et signe un retour en fanfare pour le groupe anglais. Tout en gardant ce qui a fait leur identité depuis leurs débuts, ils expérimentent et nous impressionnent par un son toujours très inventif. On retrouve avec grand bonheur ces quatre musiciens qui nous accompagnent depuis de longues années, avec des frissons tout au long de l’écoute. Alors juste merci pour tout ça et bravo pour ce disque touchant et entraînant. On vous encourage vivement à l’écouter dès sa sortie et de notre côté on retourne se le passer en boucle. Un pur bonbon pour l’été, qui vient faire de moments de vie difficiles des morceaux forts et marquants.

Eight years after their last album as a four-piece, and four years after the album I WENT TO HELL AND BACK, the English band As It Is are back with their original line-up for a brand-new album. After some difficult years of therapy and reflecting on their desire to make music together, they’re finally back! Simply titled As It Is, this new album from the Brighton-based quartet will be released on July 17th via FLG. Twelve new tracks recount this human journey and offer a glimpse of the dawn of a new era for the band.

The danceable rhythm of “I’m So Alive” kicks off this album, delighting us with the return of Patty Walters’ voice, which is as infectious and full of emotion as ever. Right from this opening track, you can sense a desire for renewal, whilst also recognising a sound reminiscent of the 2017 album okay., complete with a surprise saxophone solo and a choir at the end of the track. The guitar duo he forms with Benjamin Langford-Biss is in fine form, and it’s a pure delight to hear them playing and singing together again, as Ben also provides backing vocals. On the next track, the band welcomes another Brighton local in the form of Murray Macleod from The XCerts, who have, incidentally, just released an album on the same label. The two sounds blend perfectly, and given the personal histories of both bands, it’s easy to see why this song came about. The lyrics are deeply personal and the emotion comes across effortlessly. On the rhythm side, Alistair Testo on bass and Patrick Foley on drums work wonders on tracks such as “Do You Remember?” and the highly entertaining and surprising “Live, Laugh, Love, Los Angeles”, which once again features the saxophone, bringing fresh sounds to the English quartet’s music – and it works a treat! The emotion returns in full force with “Marilyn”, which has been available for some time now and showcases Patty’s guitar playing. Once again, the personal nature of the lyrics touches our hearts and makes us feel a little more alive, so we don’t lose heart.

“Watching The World Go Bye” brings home the harsh reality of today’s world, whilst “Lose Your Way & Find Yourself” reminds us just how important it is to find our own path to a better life, and just how much our friends can help us along the way. This powerful track took almost a year to create and marked the band’s comeback in the run-up to this album. Once again, the quartet’s strength lies in their desire to keep delivering tracks that the crowd can sing along to in the mosh pit, whilst moving away from the pop-punk sounds of their early albums towards a much more pop-rock sound that suits them perfectly. As It Is treat us to “Last At The Party”, with its jazzy finale that once again showcases the band’s new creative direction. “Turn To Dust” takes on an electro-acoustic vibe, with Ben brilliantly taking on an even greater share of the vocals on the verses. The backing vocals are also in full force, and needless to say, we’ll have no trouble singing along to this track at the band’s future gigs. The riff in the middle of the track takes us back to U2, much to our surprise, but once again it sends shivers down our spines. The pop side of the sound comes through strongly on “If I Ever Lost You”, with that raw emotion still evident in the vocals and guitar playing of Patty and Ben, and in the performance of Foley and Ali.We’re slowly approaching the end, but first Patty draws us into a beautiful acoustic moment with the sublime “Not Anymore”, once again a deeply personal track. Finally, a touch of hope brings this album to a close with “What If It All Works Out”, a catchy track that leaves us with a tearful smile on our lips and allows the musicians to express themselves at the height of their artistry one last time.

This self-titled album by As It Is is a great success and marks a triumphant return for the English band. Whilst retaining what has defined their identity since their early days, they experiment and impress us with a sound that remains as inventive as ever. It’s a real joy to be reunited with these four musicians who have been with us for so many years, sending shivers down our spines throughout the album. So, thank you for all of this, and well done on this moving and catchy album. We strongly encourage you to give it a listen as soon as it’s released, and as for us, we’re going back to playing it on repeat. A real treat for the summer, turning difficult moments in life into powerful and memorable tracks.
